It probably was the best of the prequels but that's not saying much!!!! Everything felt super rushed in this filme. I didn't buy into Anakin's turn to the dark side. Seems like he should have turned on the Emperor when Padme wasn't saved just like he turned on everyone else. Plus that opening scene space battle? What the fuck was that?!?!?!? To this day I still have no idea what going on, who is good, who is bad, why I should give a shit about anything going on on the screen. What a hot mess of an action sequence. You'd get it if you watch the Clone Wars microseries made by the guy who did Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack before they made that uncanon Like I said, if it doesn't happen in the movies it doesn't exist for me.

Here's how'd I'd rank them.
These first two films are classic cinema in my opinion: Empire Strikes Back - pretty much a top ten film of all time. Amazing even today, would have loved to have seen it when it came out. Star Wars - Really superb introduction into the myth and universe of the series. A classic in its own right but not as great as the sequel.
The rest of the series is really kinda of hit and miss, and I love Star Wars. The films are at best good or okay, but they do have a fair share of great moments. The prequels had problems with poor dialog, acting chemistry, and plot focus. It really all comes down to personal preference really.
Phantom Menace - This was the first Star War film I saw in a theater. I was a young kid in 1999. It was a sublime experience. Obviously it has some SHIT moments and ideas - Jar Jar, etc. But there was a bad ass villain, an awesome jedi duo, a top 4 Jedi lightsaber battle, and pod racing wasn't that bad was it? I really really like the style of the film. It's honestly one of the best things about it. Very vibrant and well done.
Revenge of the Sith - Pace is off but its got some great action, and honestly that's what everyone wanted with this movie. The dark side turn is a little awkward but ewan mcgregor is really underrated in this movie. Great battle scenes, mediocre plot development and flow.
Return of the Jedi - This movie has one of my all time favorite scenes in Star Wars with the Jubba the Hut deal, but it's really down hill from there. Ewoks are pretty lame. It still has at sublime climax scene with the rebellion battle and Luke vs Vader, and Vader's turn back into Anakin. I just think the middle is a bit weak.
Attack of the Clones - Bright spots - Kamino and Obi's mystery search, the final battle with all the Jedi. The weak spots: pretty much everything else. Awkward romantic chemistry.

I went back and watched every Star Wars film on Blu-Ray from Episode I to VI for the first time ever last month.
As a kid, it was all about Revenge Of The Sith. It had all of the cool characters, the lightsaber fights, the action. Watching it back though, I really didn't like the awful Anakin/Padme which I didn't notice as a child. It's not really Hayden Christensen that's the problem, it's his awful dialogue. Nowhere near as bad as it was in Attack Of The Clones. "I don't like sand" = worst chat up line in history.
But there's some awful shit in the original trilogy as well, which nobody seems to remember! Alec Guiness is incredibly wooden as Obi-Wan Kenobi, a lot of the dialogue in A New Hope in really cringey and I still believe it should have been the Wookies rather than the Ewoks in Return Of The Jedi.
I'm going to put in on record now that this is my current order of Star Wars films from best to worst, after seeing them all in glorious HD.
1. Return Of The Jedi
2. Revenge Of The Sith (probably letting my childhood memories cloud my judgement)
3. The Empire Strikes Back
4. A New Hope
5. Attack Of The Clones
6. The Phantom Menace
Phantom Menace really is shit. Darth Maul and Qui-Gon are both decent characters but the film is just really poor and too dependent on CGI. Dagobah in the Original Trilogy looks like a planet from another galaxy, because it is all real. The water, the smoke, the trees, they were all real objects. Naboo in the prequel trilogy looks like something from a video game because its not real and our subconscious mind can see that.
