I was in London couple months ago and saw the Kinks show/musical Sunny Afternoon. It was basically the story of the band in the 60s and the hurdles they went up against with performances of a number of hit as well as lesser known songs by the cast. Really enjoyed the show, it was terrific. The chap playing Dave Davies was especially spot on.
I knew the band's big hits from the 60s before going to the show - what a classic series of 1960s singles - but have since been making my way through their albums and loving what I hear. Most of the time. Some of the 72-75 stuff is a bit too theatrical (for the lack of a better word) for my taste. The late 70s stuff is better though, which I've just got to.
Favourite big hits... Waterloo Sunset (of course) Set Me Free Dedicated Follower of Fashion All Day and all of the Night
Some of my favourite lesser known songs...
Something Better Beginning (from Kinda Kinks, 1965) Milk Cow Blues (Kink Kontroversy, 1965) Rosie Please Come Home (Face to Face, 1966) Too Much on my Mind (Face to Face, 1966) Afternoon Tea (Something Else, 1967) Picture Book (Village Green Preservation Society, 1968) Shangri-La (Arthur, 1969) Strangers (Lola va Powerman and the Money-go-Round, 1970) This Time Tomorrow (Lola va Powerman and the Money-go-Round, 1970) 20th Century Man (Muswell Hillbilies, 1971)

Do your worst, we'll do our best. Remember what Mr. Churchill says.
So many great songs. I guess this is my favorite. Usually seems overlooked though.

Heard this BBC radio 2 programme the other night and really enjoyed it.... Russell Davies in conversation with Ray Davies. They discuss Ray's life and career, framed by a conversation about the hit musical, Sunny Afternoon. It's available on iPlayer at the link below. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05xqxv2
