I'm just interested in what everyone's thoughts on Billy Joel is? Do you guys think Noel or Liam appreciate Joel's music at all? Just like Noel, Billy has been hugely influenced by The Beatles and he is a master at writing great melodies. I know we all rank Noel as one of the best songwriters of all time but don't you guys think Billy Joel is right up there with Noel as well? I've never seen anyone here mention Joel before so I thought I'd start a thread and see what everyone thinks. Thanks

Never got the appeal of Billy Joel besides Piano Man. I'll listen to that song almost every time if I hear it on the radio but if I never hear another song from him I'd be fine. Interesting that he was one of the biggest artists in the US and he hasnt released any albums , besides a classical music release, since 1993. Just gave up releasing pop/rock songs. Heard he is good in concert though.

is billy joel well known over in the uk? i wonder if noel even knows who he is.
i saw him in concert ages ago, in tandem with elton john. i lean more elton than billy. actually a lot more. it's funny, when i was a kid i used to listen to billy joel's songs a lot, as you couldn't get away from them on top 40 radio here in the 80's. innocent man was a HUGE album. but i can't tell you the last time i sat down and listened to any of his songs.

Heh, when I used to go to the department stores with my mom back in the day, I remember The River of Dreams always playing. I have one of his compilations and then The Stranger (my favorite off that is Vienna).
Neither of my parents are into him though. They don't get the appeal either, but to be fair they came to the US in the early 80's and were in their 20's in the 90's. I think for me it's because when I was in school, they exposed us to a lot of classical music, musicals, and jazz.

I first became aware of him years back - remember that Westlife cover of Uptown Girl?
Sadly for Auld William, he's been fighting a losing battle with me thanks to that.

Billy Joel sucks. He was on my "DO NOT PLAY" list at my wedding. Along with Bon Jovi.

Do you guys think Noel or Liam appreciate Joel's music at all? Do you really need Noel or Liam to dictate your taste in music? I don't, because I believe that is closed mindness.

Noel - inevitably for a songwriter - has some great choices for his favourites. But sorry, Noel loses all credibility when he thinks Kasabian are brilliant and that The Beach Boys are shit. My reaction to that is 'Fuck off and good night!'

I spend most of my time using headphones because of the kind of comments my parents make about music they don't like. A lot of people have very strong words when it comes to all of it. I don't necessarily like the stuff my brother listens to, but I make it a point to not get so emotionally charged up about it. Music can be a very personal thing.
They can all like who they like, and I can like who I like. There is more to a human being than just their preferred tastes in music, etc.

Joel never appealed to me in any shape or form if I want a white dude playing really white pop/rock piano songs, I'd pick Elton John over Joel everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Joel can't even hold a candle to Ben Folds as far as I'm concerned. I've heard he's a jerk as well. He has a gift for melody but he is in the same category as James Taylor is for me - suburban MOR singer-songwriter that distinctly makes old white baby boomer music.
Sorry don't want this to come across like I'm attacking the original poster, but Joel just kinda ruffles me up with his boring songs and his massive bank account.

I don't need Noel to dictate my music taste at all. I don't need Noel to dectate the fact that Duke Ellington is one of the greatest composers of all time and the knowledge that Louis Armstrong influenced the world like no other. I don't need Noel to tell me Mozart wrote timeless melodies. Anyway by brother is the die hard Joel fan and I'm a die hard Oasis fan. But we always wondered what Noel thought Of Billy and vice versa. But I was curious what u the die hard Oasis fans thought of Joel. Peace

I like some of his songs (Goodbye Saigon, She's Always A Woman, We Didn't Start The Fire, Piano Man, Uptown Girl and a few others.) but that's about it really. He also has a lot of songs I dislike. I don't really care for him.
I also don't get it when people like or dislike something just because Liam or Noel might of might not. Surely you've got your own mind. Use it.

I never really go out of my way to listen to him - but when I do, I enjoy his music.
I have his Ultimate Collection double CD, but haven't as of yet gone through all of the tracks. Know his hits, though, obviously
