I've never really understood why people get excited for instrumentals, unless your using them to create a film or advert or something? Karaoke??
Anyone?

Sometimes you can hear bits in songs that you wouldn't be able to hear in the album version. They can be good for creating remixes and edits as well. Also, if they're mastered the same as the album version you can create isolated vocals from them.

Cheers guys, I will check that out.
I'm not using them to make videos etc : I just like to listen to the mix of an album and what's going on deeper than the vocals.
Thanks

You hear bits that the vocal hides and then when you go back to the original version, you can listen out and hear it. I found bits in The Balled Of Mighty I that I hadn't heard in the vocal version and now I notice it. Jim's site is so good for that sort of thing, really appreciate those uploads.

I love dissecting songs and paying attention to the stuff that's hidden, whether it's a cool bassline buried underneath everything else or funny sound effects. Audacity is good for that stuff too. If you've got the right kind of files you can extract different bits. That way I found out the bassline in While My Guitar.. by The Beatles is really cool, and the weird noises at the end.
