Tought question to answer. I'll go Achtung Baby. I was a little too young for Joshua Tree but Achtung was right in my wheelhouse when I first started to get into serious music in the early 90s. Both masterpieces.

The run from War to Achtung Baby (not counting Rattle and Hum) is outstanding. Could pick any one of those, and they are all different flavors. I'd go with The Joshua Tree with The Unforgettable Fire a close second. Probably put War in third place, I've always thought that Achtung Baby is just a bit overrated. A great reinvention in sound and a new chapter in their career arc, but I've always preferred their 80's stuff.

I love all their albums up to pop, where they went to "I like half of those albums and the other half is forgeattable" If you made me to chose one Achtung baby would be it.

I'd say Unforgettable Fire, but its always hard to argue with Joshua Tree. War is pretty strong too. That said, Achtung Baby is y 2nd favourite.

...and i liked achtung baby back when it came out, but i hope i never have to hear 'mysterious ways' ever again. if that song rears it's ugly head when i go see them live i am so at the beer stand at the very first note.

Mine is definitely Achtung Baby,
Although I tend to skip Mysterious Ways
Ultraviolet, Acrobat and Love is Blindness is a great trilogy to end an album

Apart from Rattle & Hum, Atomic Bomb and No Line, I can listen to all those albums from start to finish and I could sing all those songs backwards.
Amazing career, anyone who doesn't appreciate them even if they aren't fans are really doing themselves a disservice. True to say there'd probably be no Oasis without them.

My mum has loved U2 pretty much ever since they started. If pressed she'd call them her favourite band. Her favourite by far is October, which I know isn't a very popular choice.

Do people actually dislike Rattle & Hum or are you just not bothered with it?
I think Zooropa has some decent tracks on it too, its a good listen. I think Numb is a fantastic track. What I imagine acid would feel like in a coma.

What I imagine acid would feel like in a coma. I'm not really bothered about Rattle and Hum. I really like Desire and Angel of Harlem but on the whole it doesn't really leave much of an impression. I remember buying the CD of Zooropa when I was about 12 or 13 and really not liking it at all. I thought it sounded completely different to the other albums and not in a good way. I've not really gone back to it much but that description of Numb made me want to give it a re-listen.

What I imagine acid would feel like in a coma. It's not a bad album, but it's so patchy beyond belief. The original studio recordings are what I listen to, I actually like the live gospel take on Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For but most of the live tunes don't cut it for me - simply because Bono ruins it. Remember that speech he gives in the middle of Silver & Gold? "Am I bugging ya? I don't mean to bug ya.... Okay Edge, play the blues!!'..... And then The Edge proceeds to play the most unblues like guitar solo in the history of music! It ruins it for me! Listening to it, I constantly think 'I was REALLY fucking enjoying that until that speech'. In a nutshell, that bit in Silver & Gold is what is wrong with the entire Rattle & Hum project.

What does everyone think of Passengers? Sounds like a continuation of the most experimental aspects of Zooropa - you know, the collaboration album they did with Brian Eno (NOTE TO NOEL: This is an example of releasing left of field material and not chickening out...).
There are some really great tunes on it - Slug, Your Blue Room, Miss Sarajevo, Beach Sequence, Corpse (which sounds like Radiohead before they even became Radiohead!).
