Somebody mentioned to me in another thread that this would make a great thread, the greatest song the world has NEVER heard.
In my opinion it's definitely a song by The La's, probably the most underrated band in the world and for good reason. They only have one proper album which the lead singer seems to despise, and they've had so many different lineups and so many cash-grabbing reunions over the years they've never really made it big. But anyway enough background information.
'Was It Something I Said?' is the greatest song the world has never heard in my opinion. To this day it hasn't seen a proper release and it's highly unlikely that it ever will. The only versions available are a sketchy half-finished demo and a couple of poor quality live recordings which is a crying shame as it's such an amazing song. If you haven't already, I'd recommend you give it a listen.
Another song I considered was another La's number, 'Who Knows?'. I heard this one after seeing Liam G mention it in an interview. It's only proper release as far as I'm aware was as a b-side on some versions of the There She Goes single. It only has 2 lines in the whole song "Who knows what tomorrow knows, who knows what the future holds" making it unbelievably powerful. Fun fact: I read somewhere that Lee Mavers has accused Noel Gallagher of plagiarizing the chord progression of 'Who Knows?' in 'Some Might Say'.
So what is,
The greatest song the world has NEVER heard?

Fleet Foxes - Mykonos
It's a well known in the indie community but in the general public it's still an obscure song.

I'd also go for a La's song. The closing track on their album, 'Looking Glass'. I know it's been officially released but how many people really know about this band apart from 'There She Goes'?
Off topic, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that my English teacher of 4 years was a fan of the La's as well as a whole host of other bands that I'm into. That sparked an hour long discussion on the finer points of music.

Another one I feel the need to mention, All Across The Sand by The Stone Roses. One of my all time favourite songs yet I'm the only person that I know who knows it.

Your welcome. (Although 'Unreleased' may have been a more apt title. Just thought it'd be cool to possibly share stuff people may have never heard... & possibly find a new good track or two!) Now I don't consider any of these to be the 'greatest', but they're all good songs that would be considered solid even in their bands world renowned back catalogues. Some of them are are great, some of them less so, but they all deserved to be released in their appropriate time period. (Yes some of them have been released as part of a compilation album at some point, but none of them ever made it to an LP). Talk to Me [Live] - Nirvana Do Ri Mi [Demo] - Nirvana The Kurt Cobain penned 'Old Age' is pretty good too. I won't include 'You Know You're Right' but that's arguably the best song not to make a Nirvana release whilst Kurt was still alive. Silkworms [Live] - Guns N' Roses Marmite track. Mixed opinions about this song in the GNR community, but I personally like it. Potential is definitely there. According to Axl the chorus has since been removed and possibly replaced. The demo to an unreleased GNR track 'Going Down' leaked a few years back which is even better, but unfortunately it isn't available on Youtube. A quick Google search will easily find it elsewhere however. A 10 second clip of 'Jackie Chan' also exists. On the Run from the MI5 [Demo] - Arctic Monkeys A cool pre-debut album demo which never made it too an official release. Hwy 1 [Live] - Them Crooked Vultures A cut which has only ever been played live. Wave of Mutilation [Demo #1] - Pixies The earliest sketch of this song had entirely different verses and bridges which were eventually scrapped leaving only the "Wave of Mutilation" chant to survive. The Hard Way [Demo?]- Pink Floyd An interesting number part of the 'Household Objects' project to follow up Dark Side of the Moon. Unsurprising scrapped... but development potential was existed. Hooker [Demo] - Dave Grohl A semi-serious pre-Foo Fighters demo that was recently released. Some serious James Brown channelling by Dave - aha. More enjoyable than much of Sonic Highway IMO. Rattlesnake - Radiohead Thom York rapping? Lol! Mixed results but a fun listen non the less. Thought it'd interesting to share!

I'd forgotten about On The Run From The MI5 so cheers for the reminder LSD Jesus. I also quite like a tune called 'Knock A Door Run' from that era of Arctic Monkeys.
The best unreleased Guns N Roses song I know is Crash Diet. Brilliant guitar work in that intro, I don't think it's Slash who's playing on it though.

I think it's West Arkeen on guitar, but I wouldn't hold me to that.

Neil Young's got hundreds of great unreleased songs, 'Give me Strength', 'Try', 'Seperate Ways' were all recorded for the aborted album Homegrown, and are all some of his best stuff. Those first two might be his best songs. There is no lost album, or obscure demo or other musical artefact I want to hear as badly as a proper studio version of that album. None of those three songs have leaked demos or anything as far as I know, but you can hear live versions on YouTube. If I was near my laptop I'd post links... There's a great version of 'Try' from Amsterdam 2008, Seperate Ways from 1993, and I've got a couple versions of Give me Strength that are pretty great.
'Pushed it over the End' AKA 'Citizen Kane Junior Blues' is another lost gem from the same era. Someone was telling me the other day it was released on an odds and ends collection (I think they mean 'decade') but I'm not sure that's true. Anyway, you want the solo acoustic version from the Bottom Line Club 1974, not the CSNY version or the electric one. There's so much great unreleased Neil stuff, it's the best part of being a fan of his. Because God knows he'll never release what you want him to...
Anyway, sift through all that rustie gibberish and you'll find yourself some tunes!
Oh and 'Bye Bye My Family'/ 'Don't Stop the Happenin'/ Hold Back the Night/ Anyway you know the one I mean... deserves to be up there as well, great tune

Noel's next album. We haven't heard it yet as he hasn't written it yet. But you better believe it will contain the greatest song the world will be about to hear. Bank it.

I'd give "Standing Up For You" by Third Eye Blind a shout:
It's of course not the 'greatest,' but it's really good and, for some reason, didn't get onto Ursa Major (It's definitely better than half the songs on there). I'm loving pretty much all the songs in this thread!

Lay Of The Land by Kid Harpoon.
I bought his second EP very cheap in my local record shop years ago which includes this song. Truly beautiful song and he's very talented, yet so underrated.

If the Greatest Song the world has never heard was by The La's I highly doubt it was Something I Said as the OP posted. I'd go with the beautiful ballad Tears in the Rain. It's ridiculously good. By the way, here's probably the best quality version of The Kitchen Tape by The La's including the songs mentioned before and some others.
