The sad thing is Luke Haines is actually an amazing songwriter. I recommend everyone check After Murder Park by The Auteurs, that record is a masterpiece.
He does come across as pretentious too often, even though he is prone to self-deprecating humour.
It seems like he is just bitter towards everything brit-pop, maybe because he couldn't get really successful while writing great songs within the genre?

There is a huge pitchfork following that have this opinion that anyone who likes anything Gallagher related is a lager lout who knows nothing about music.
Then you hear the music these people like themselves and its like - really?
What they'll never realise is when we hear Noel and Liam, we hear soul. Not soul music but real music. From real people. And that makes it all the more special. You can talk about arty shite like Radiohead all you want but Noel creates magic melodies and he's created the soundtrack to a generation. Goodnight

My impression is that all the pretentious critics who write Noel's fans off as musical cavemen are just stuck in a phase you have to go through when you're on your way to discover different music.
These people probably started liking stuff that wasn't musically complicated but great (Oasis is a good example), and they moved on to the next step where you start discovering more complex things. The problem is when people go through that, they tend to become pretentious pricks and disregard whatever they liked before because it's "too simplistic". It's only later when they get a broader view of music that they become less of an extremist and start appreciating things for what they are, as long as they are good.
The Pitchfork crowd are a mix of people who are stuck in the second phase and a bunch of hipster posers who want their mainstream (a word they love) pop marketed as a different, more fashionable, thing.
In any case, art criticism is just about the most unnecessary profession in this world, in my opinion. Critics are rarely qualified to do their job (how many music critics actually make music, let alone have a musical education?) while they try to push as the absolute truth their opinions, or even worse, the magazine's ideology.
I always remember one of the many great quotes Frank Zappa gave us when dealing with popular music magazines: The guy was sharp as fuck, for sure.

Why does he keep changing the title of the album in the article? It's neither funny nor clever.

Moronic and boring. Stopped reading after his edgy comparison of Riverman to Taxman. Probably because they both have "-man" in their titles. Buy you need to have a high IQ and not be a beer swilling thug to realize that

Goodnight Don't be that guy/girl, please. Perpetuating stereotypes is not cool. I really don't get that arty term for anything that's not 4/4 and three chords. We're discussing art here since that's what music is. Unless it is conceived as product, but we can leave that discussion to Beyonce fans.

lets clear some things up about The Auteurs and Luke Haines.
about the article: Oasis is my favorite band but i have to admit that the article has a point of truth about many things in the oasis-noel-liam world that even oasisdiehard fans say all the time in the forum. Just read the posts and threads about a future oasis "reunion" and you ll get an idea... ok, too many bitter and hard words in it, but hey, we should not forget that Noel is the master of insults! i agree with most of the things on his article and before you call me a Noel hater i remind you that Luke Haines also dislike Beady Eye (i suppose for the same reasons).
Luke Haines is a crazy genious, a weirdo, a real musician-artist, writing for years great albums and songs. Its a shame to talk about him here as a "Luke Haines who"? or a "nobody" or "i dont know that guy and his band/bands". The Auteurs were one of the greatest bands of the 90s, they were never hipsters (even if the hipsters love them) and i m definitely sure that Luke Haines also hates hipsters too...actually he hates so many things. Its fair not to agree with him but sayin he s a nobody and you dont know his band/bands make oasis forum to sound more stupid than him, make us sound like a bunch of guys with no idea about music around except the oasis/noel/liam and the dadrock world...
music is not only about oasis kasabian, weller and arctic monkeys, sales, #1s and stadiums...
Velvet Underground, joy division, syd barrett, sonic youth, pavement, pixies, Nick Drake, Scott Walker, the stone roses.... to name a few, so many great indie bands of the 80s , almost any fuckin alternative band of the last 15 years...what do they have in common?they didnt make it in the charts, they didnt have big sales and you could easily call them for these reasons "nobodies"
Leave the hate behind and check the first 3 albums of The Auteurs "New Wave", "Now I'm a Cowboy" and "After Murder Park" or even his work with Black Box Recorder. i m definitely sure that most of you are gonna love/like a lot his music.

Somehow manages to be the only person in the world unaware of Riverman being a rip-off of Pinball.
He's right about the lyrics though, Chasing Yesterday is one of the worst if not the worst album Noel's ever written in that regard.

I've read worse. Never heard of this guy and probably for a reason. He does this every time an Oasis-related release happens. Almost as if he's bitter or something.

The notion that Wonderwall "invented dad rock" is utterly absurd. What is this guy on about? Mind you, his book is in my Amazon wish list, probably a good read, the bitter old prick.

Fucking cracking article, and lot is spot on.
Hardly new, I remember articles moaning about Oasis' conservatism - and spawning copy cat bands - back in summer 1996.
But it really doesn't matter.
Noel enjoys his music, and lots of people do also, so onwards we march to the O2 tomorrow!

Yeah the lyrics are the same as they have always been but I don't listen for the lyrics. I listen for the melody. Good lyrics with a shit song means nothing.

That's cute. Guess we can't all be this awesome: BTW, he's exactly as old as Noel. Looks like an Operation Yewtree suspect. I'm sure if he was grooming kids it'd only be as some kind of ironic social comment. We wouldn't get it, we're not clever enough. The crowning glory of this man's 25 year career in music is a #20 hit which is basically just a moderately attractive woman talking about wet dreams. Such a shame that chancers like Noel have eclipsed such a phenomenal talent.

Look, the guy is pretentious, has never managed to sustain a hugely successful and profitable career*, he looks like shit, holds an unnecessary grudge against brit-pop and Noel in particular and the review comes across as petty. We get it.
Now do yourselves a favour and look for After Murder Park. You can thank me later.
*(Not that that is important. Oh, and stop giving so much credit to chart positions, please. We should know better than to look at the charts, especially nowadays.)

Yeah, everyone who likes Gallagher music are beer swilling, low IQ thugs and you're so smart and so interesting and so different and so cool because you're 'above' it. Fuck off. Boring twerp
