I've been a guitarist for 14 years etc so I've been there, done the gigs and know my stuff. Now, while I love Marr's work on TBOTMI, I can't help but listen and think, "Why couldn't Noel have just done that?!" Like it's complicated and fairly straight forward and in that key, there is not much room to work with so, he would have thought of it eventually. Thoughts? Or am I on my own here?

Noel probably could have done it but it's not his style and he wouldn't necessarily have come up with the part.

Is Marr's work the solo in the middle or the little one at the end?

I feel the same. A) which part does he do and b) what's so special about it that Noel couldn't do it as well? Love it though

It is pretty simple, not like the early and rather complicated stuff he did with The Smiths (took me about two minutes to learn the outro part by ear, and I'm far from a good guitar player) but I agree that Noel would never have done it.

One thing is for sure, Noel can play it live

No one could have done that delicate thing at the end BUT Marr. His sound entirely.

What you learn after playing guitar for a long time is that many famous solos and riffs are not hard to play, and most people can play them with practice. What makes them famous/special is that they have a feeling that perfectly fits the song. What Marr brought to BOTMI is not hard to play but fits so well with the song. Given another guitarist, they might have tried to over complicate it. But Marr got the balance just right - melodic and understated.

See, I agree with that 100% However, with the notes he played, I just can't get my head around how Noel couldn't do it or come up with it himself. The playing is immense and I'm not having a pop at it...It's just like "Well, it's very simple stuff and some of the easiest stuff Marr has ever played....Why couldn't Noel come out with it?!" Again, I'm not bad mouthing the playing....I think it's fabulous.....Just with Noel ability to know what a song needs, I just think he would have got there himself in the end

Yeah, I agree 100 percent. I honestly think Noel would have arrived at something similar.

I don't doubt Noel would have come up with something similar but he's wanted Marr on a record for a while since 2002.
Think he was always pissed off that he played on (what he calls) one of his worst songs haha

it's easy looking at it after the fact and saying oh it's so simple why couldn't noel do it
fact is it's not that simple just because the guitar part is easy to play
the creation is the key, the mood, the feeling and the energy, as somebody pointed out . . .
that's what you hear on the record. not a guy plucking a few strings
