For me, its definitely CY - songwriting may be just as good but CY is a very exciting album, great sounds, its not so safe like the debut, and the production does wonders for it.
I think the HFB demos CD that came with International Magic makes a better first album for some tracks, the final for others - ideal album would be a mix of the two.

NGHFB: 2 great songs (EOTR, BA) + 3 good songs CY: 5 great songs (Riverman, LATD, TDOTL, TRS, WTSRTS) + 2 good songs
The rest of both is totally meh.
NGHFB bonustracks are by a mile better than CY bonustracks though.

I think the first album was absolutely great, but so far CY seems fresher and livelier, so I'll go with that one. Only time will tell which record is the better one.

NGHFB is suffering from a bit of Heathen Chemistry syndrome for me at the moment. There's some brilliant standout tracks. But It's just so straight and predictable and the production is awful.
Don't get me wrong, I love HFB1, it's miles ahead of Heathen Chemistry but like that album, I never feel the need to go back to it anymore now that I've overplayed all the good melodies. Once you've heard it once you've heard all you're going to hear, all the tracks are instant and don't need to grow etc.
Chasing Yesterday sounded slightly better than HFB1 on first listen and there's also so much more variety and energy. It keeps growing on me even now and it's a much more addictive listen. It gets better every time I hear it but with the first album I forced myself to play it sparingly in case I got bored with it too quickly, which is what happens with straight pop songs.
NGHFB 7/10 CY 8.5/10

CY for me, and I love his first album. CY imo is a 9/10 album, Riverman, X-Ray, WTSRTS, Mexican, Ballad, DOTL & of course The Right Stuff, just fantastic songs.

CY, a little predictably perhaps - we've had this one for three weeks now. But I'm rather sure I'll still like CY more when the freshness has worn off; the songwriting is just as good and the production is miles better.

I don't know. I really love HFB. But I think I would vote for CY. If only for the fact that I like everything on CY better that STC and RM. But I have hard time picking between the best songs on either album. Both really strong

I'm still extremely fond of his debut. But I've been listening to Chasing Yesterday constantly and I'm still not bored of any tracks

Songs are fantastic in both, and I still listen to NGHFB regularly, but CY has more variety and better production
