(Not the demo)
When I first pressed play... holy Noel... in my mind the thought popped in my head that I had waited for so long since hearing the soundcheck version... it almost got me teary-eyed. I can't fully describe it, but there was a sense of peace that came over me when I first heard it. It was calming. It was a sense of relief. It was bliss. It was really beautiful.
I just think that it's perfect. There is absolutely nothing that went wrong with this song. 'The Dying of the Light' is simply a beautiful track, and is something I soon get to keep when the album hits the shelves.
I don't know... just wanted to get my thoughts about the song out there and how I felt when I first heard it.
What was it like for you when you first heard 'The Dying of the Light'?

I was underwhelmed. The drums and bass are plodding, unimaginative and annoying and the solo/guitar licks sound like some fan improvising on top of it. I'm hoping the demo is better/more delicately executed.
The lack of creativity on this track compared to the rest of the album makes me think its the only one AA haven't been involved with at some point which coincides with it "debuting" late in the HFB#1 album cycle/after his work with AA.

The soundcheck track I thought was amazing - played it to death on a summer's evening. Just made sense.
Noel has his reasons for changing the vibe, but alas - if the demo is like the soundcheck then that'll be my version of TDOTL... and the one which I'll listen to over and over.
Wait a minute - is the demo available?

Post Oasis songs that made me grin first time was Everybody's on the Run and Flick of the Finger - I just knew then I would love them. Hopefully there will be one song from Chasing Yesterday that does that for me when I get round to hearing it.

The song is very emotional, it's giving me shivers listening to you say this!
so exciting. When I first heard Alone on the Rope, I definitely got tears haha! no shame in the emotional game.

Worrying - sounds a bit like If I Had A Gun treatment no? It's much better than that. The drums don't dominate the track and sit nicely at the back of the mix. I wouldn't agree that it sounds plodding. It's much more mellow than If I Had A Gun. I also really like the little bits of lead guitar. All opinions. You'll make your mind up in a couple of weeks.

I'd say it's very much like If I Had A Gun in the sense that the beauty/delivery has been squeezed out, but you'll have to make your own mind up, your taste my differ

The piano in it might be simple but is very emotional, as is the guitar solo.

When I heard the soundcheck version, I was begging that it'd never end up on one of Noels albums. I hated it. I thought it was whiny and boring. Blugh.
And then when the album leaked, this was the first I listened to. And I was overwhelmed. It was as if a warm blanket came over me, you know? I wanted to cry, but I felt calm and relieved at the same time. It was emotional. God what a beautiful song. It gave me goosebumps. And then later I listened to it again and again and again. And everytime it gave me goosebumps.
This is a song that turned from "gawd let's hope this will never be released" to "this is fucking beautiful. Amazing, favourite on the album".
The effects are great and give it a mystical sphere. The piano is nice and so is the guitar. It's not plodding at all, and I'm sure it will sound even more wonderful in perfect quality.

I've listened to this more than any other song of the album. I really liked the soundcheck but this version brings it on a whole new level.
The first time I've heard it after the leak I was literally speechless, full of emotions running through my veins. Goosebumps? A lot of them. And when I got to that simple yet liberating solo I instantly knew that The Dying of the Light would become one of my all time favourites from Noel. I wish I could express myself better, but my lacking knowledge of English language doesn't allow me to write something good.
In the end, it can be considered a typical Noel ballad (and it probably is, same chords, same structure) but I think he really nailed it this time. I love everything about it, I can't find a flaw in this track.

Made me feel overwhelmed with joy hearing this masterpiece for the first time, I'm so glad it got the right production.
Riverman, The Girl With X-Ray Eyes, Lock All The Doors and then this, what a running order!

The production reminds me of Roll It Over which I absolutely love...stroke of genius.

Brilliant song. The guitar is the highlight for me, like the The Edge but better...gorgeous, dark, atmospheric and overall a highlight of ANY album. Great name, too.

I'm sort of in-between opinions. I recognize its beauty, yet it's one of the songs I've least listened too. I suppose this is because it's so similar to the soundcheck which I've given a lot of play over these 3 years.
It's underwhelming because it hasn't really changed, but it's overwhelming because it got even more beautiful with the addition of other instruments. Plus, the low quality of the leak tracks don't really do it justice.
Also of note, I've been mostly listening to the songs which are brand new and not playing the ones which we've heard before. That includes DOTL and LATD. I want to learn the new songs.
And in general, I'm not even playing those much because I do not want to overplay any of the songs before the album officially drops.

What's this about a demo?? When has this been mentioned? Are we going to get other demos? Maybe last the last album...

Different song, but was anyone else heavily reminded of post-2000 U2 and particularly The Edge by the guitar playing on While The Song Remains The Same? The atmospheric guitar on The Dying Of The Light really reminds me of the background ambient sounds Ed O'Brien did a lot of on The Bends. I'll quit my Radiohead comparisons now, I promise.

I've said it in another thead, but one of the guitar riffs in WTSRTS is basically taken from Coldplay's The Hardest Part - but of course Jonny Buckland is not shy about his...how shall we say...aping? of The Edge. As my avatar would suggest, I'm all ok with Radiohead comparisons Noel making music that might inspire them could be a beautiful thing indeed.
