Comes close to. WTSMG I'd say. It's difficult to judge it neutrally as you're looking at DM and WTSMG through nostalga . For sheer songwriting it's almost hitting the heights of it. DM>WTSMG>CY.

It's not, but it might be better than anything post-BHN... No

Chasing Yesterdsy needs a better cover to deliver the whole package. That cover makes Noel look like some ghetto rapper from the early 1990s. Seriously. What the fuck. Exactly. I mean, what the actual fuck.

I don't care for comparisons or similiarities that much, but remember how Mark said it had "the spirit of Definitely Maybe"? While it sounds crazy - he's not wrong on a few angles. Definitely Maybe was the start of something. Something good, something different, something real. Something new. This album has the same vibe. It's not a pastiche of that Oasis album, and that is what gives it the same spirit. In my humble opinion (that is (really secretly) a fact). Pastiche is the crucial word here - back with Oasis, I enjoyed songs like Shock of the Lightning but there was no 'wow' factor when it came out. It was same old, same old. Likewise with the whole of Dig Out Your Soul (with the exception of Falling Down). I mean, while listening to Shock of the Lightning, I had a nagging thought that was like 'this is good, but I could be listening to similar tunes like Bring It On Down and Headshrinker which I prefer'. I don't think anyone's asking for Noel to change his songwriting around, just the execution, and I think adding studio trickery and sonic experimentation can really bring a sense of surprise at times. A case in point would be U2's Achtung Baby, much of the songs followed the conventional pattern, but there was added sonic texture in the studio which gave off an impression of something brand new (as opposed to Zooropa which was unconventional loosely structured). And at the very least, fans of Noel and Oasis are just asking for something a bit more exciting sonically as opposed to just guitars, drums and bass which frankly gets very dull after a long time. I really love those first two songs off BE for example - I'm not keen on the more conventional tunes, but Flick of the Finger and Soul love I really dig. I know Soul Love ain't that popular on here, but sonically, it's atmospheric and ambient and reinforces the moody and mysterious nature of it, made all the better by Liam's resigned vocals. It's something I love - and crucially, something I can't compare with Oasis. I know some folk think I'm anti Beady Eye here but I fucking love those first two tunes off BE and it is such a great great opening to the album.

Haven't had a listen to the album yet (except Mighty I & ITHOTM, waiting for official release, pre-ordered), but I have to say, before we start comparing CY to MG & DM, just keep in mind that those two albums have had 20 years to be in our minds & to have grown a nice place in our music tastes. This just leaked a mere few days ago.

Not going to write paragraphs but yeah CY is a great album, but nowhere near the uniqueness that embodied Definitely Maybe or the sheer brilliance and instant classic status as WTSMG.

I've always thought of Soul Love as a bit of a dance track, and kind of building from Guess God Thinks I'm Abel, but instead, it is its much more modern sounding cousin that breaks new ground for the guys. The little guitar bit is sooo simple, but it's driving, and really does set a nice tone for the song. Along with Back After the Break, Off at the Next Exit, and Flick of the Finger, those four would've been brilliant singles for the album cycle.

The problems with soul love are #2 the chord progresion: way too similar to flick of the finger, this could be no issue after the cool outro which bring us to #2 tracklisting: you wanted to relax? TIIIIIIIIIME TO FACE THE PEOPLE, like an alarm when all you want to do is sleep if they wanted a rocker after SL Shine A Light could have done it without being as annoying #3 lyrics this is poetry that you could write in school(I dont have much problem with this as the vocal melody is one of Liams best) Oh well this was way more than i had planned to write on my phone.... Carry on.

Has Noel finally produced an album that can stand alongside DM and WTSMG? In the mere physical matter I can put(whenever released) the CY cd next to DM and MG. To answer the other question... Is CY as good as DM and MG? If youre looking to rock out the answer is most def no(bar two songs it isnt a rock album at all), but if you want something eclectic that echoes some of the stuff that Noel has wrote in the past(Lock All The Doors & girl with XRay) and hear noel tackle new generes(for him) then this is your album. But that could change in the future wheter Noel records a full Jazz odysey or you get tired of the album because it isnt a pop album a la NGHFB.

No, but it's an unfair comparison. IMO it's better than SOTSOG, HC, DBTT, DOYS, HFB1, DGSS and BE and might be on par with BHN (which I love more than I probably should). That's really all you can ask for.

!!! i cant even think to compate it with BHN, TM or DBTT. imo, NGHFB1 is a better album than CY.

Ludicrous.
I never thought I would utter these words, but Gaz Coombes has written a better album. I'll leave it at that.
