Friend: "Yes! Yes! Coldplay are releasing a new album!" Me: "But you hate them!" Friend: "Yes, but I'm very excited. I can't wait!" Me: "Why?!" Friend: "Because it will be the last one! YES!!!"

as a lot know I hate coldplay , only because to me there the" air supply " of this generation. They have a lot of hits and like air supply a few i dig , but to me they are not a rock and roll band ,it's why I donr care if there " bigger " than oasis , THEY SHOULD BE , they are softer , safer , and should appeal to masses more because there in every elevator in the world ....... But im not SUPRISED if this is true I thought it was funny that martin is playing at the super bowl not coldplay ....... Will I miss them ? No ...some where in ireland as John Henry Holliday knows MAKETRADEFARE must be crying in his hipster backpack

I'm not surprised, I think this was their plan all along. A small, intimate album first and then backing it up quickly with another 'big' commercial album. I remember thinking 'is this it?' when "Ghost Stories" was released, very underwhelmed and finding it hard to believe that they had spent three years making something so average. But hearing this news reaffirms my confidence that Chris Martin definitely knew what he was doing. This will be a big album!

It isn't their last album.. Just the "completion of something" - Chris has always said he thinks as 7 albums as a story. This has never meant it is their last though...

in my opinion coldplay was in the mid-2000's as r.e.m. was in the early 90's... they were RIGHT THERE.... right on the cusp... poised to take over as the biggest band in the world. but after huge commercial success they just kind of tailed off.
U2 are still the kings and i am waiting for someone to take the crown from them... one day it will happen ---- but not today.

Just starting the hype train. Especially since Ghost Stories was a subtle release. I don't see them breaking up but maybe a 5 year hiatus? Martin will for sure do a solo album. He'll probably follow the career path of the Maroon 5 singer or something (like he already hasn't done some stuff with the Voice).

Ghost Stories is a decent album and a nice listen, but not one that is going to make an essential record to your collection, but an improvement nonetheless I feel on Mylo Xyloto. Lyrically - it's pretty atrocious, it's utterly uninspired to the point of tedium. But it was nice to have a stripped back sound rather than the bluster and over-production of Mylo Xyloto. But for such a low key release, they really could have taken a lot more risks with it - ala Amnesiac or Zooropa.
Sooner or later, I hope they will start appealing to their original demographic again - e.g. alternative rock fans who liked Radiohead, U2, REM, Oasis, etc - because they are approaching their 40s now and whatever radio friendly tunes they write just won't be picked up by radio stations. So I guess perhaps their 'final album' or 'completion of something' is their last big shout for mainstream exposure before the radio stations start to move away from them.
It's the general rule now - no matter how good it fits for radio, the stations just won't give the time to old pop stars. So I'd like to think that once they hit their forties, they could take a lot more risks that they threatened to do early on in their career as that commercial restraint ebbs away.
But it's been 6 years and counting since I really really enjoyed something of theirs - Viva La Vida was a great collection of tunes in my opinion, and was, and still is, their most ecletic of albums. At the moment, I'm not sure how inspired you can be when you live such a material lifestyle without any modesty in LA while dating Hollywood actresses.

How to hype a possible future comeback?
Saying that your band is breaking up.
Even Liam learnt this.

something is up with coldplay atm. can see them being either on an extended hiatus or calling it quits altogether. the ghost stories era has been very bizarre True Love is a brilliant song though ^ when I wrote this in the 'still the biggest' thread last week I meant it, but didnt think it would be so quick.

I think Mylo is their worst album, but Ghost Stories is their most boring. Hurts Like Heaven and Charlie Brown are two of their best songs ever in my opinion. Paradise and Major Minus are nice songs too. The best songs on Ghost Stories Always In My Head/Midnight might be around this level. Give or take my mood. Both albums have some of their worst cringe moments though. Mylo has better highlights but Ghost Stories is probably the better overall listen (barely). Ink is horrible. O was great when it came out and its still a good song but it doesn't carry the weight that Amsterdam or even Fix You does. Ghost Stories was all about subtle songs/vibes but a lot of it sounds watered down.

Sure it doesn't match another personal favorite of mine (Amsterdamn) but it doesn't have to. It stands on its own and love the angel like ending. My highlight off Ghost Stories remain Always In My Head, Midnight, O and Magic. I know a lot of people poke fun of it but I do enjoy "Magic". I imagine this is the future sound of a Chris Martin solo album. It's comimg folks.

Coldplay are a great pop rock band and this is not their final album.... I do think it will be their best since Viva though.

www.coldplaying.com/stargate-confirmed-as-producers-of-a-head-full-of-dreams-as-new-coldplay-material-draws-near/Coldplay's descent into farce continues. If the title A Head Full of Dreams wasn't so cliched and syrupy to doubt the band's serious attempt to make proper music, then surely their production team on this next album almost confirms it will be a load of tripe. They are working with Stargate - production team of Rihanna, Katy Perry, woman beater himself Chris Brown, etc - pretty much all the gutter music you can think of. And for us Brits, In terms of more local acts, their efforts consist of All Rise by Blue and S Club Party by S Club 7. I shit you not! This was a band that were bracketed alongside fellow British alternative rockers like Doves and Elbow in the early 2000s. Tell me this isn't the same band that released those excellent albums all those years ago?

I suppose the writing was on the wall when they started working with Avicii.
I'll just try and focus on pre-2009 Coldplay and ignore what followed.

I genuinely don't know if I can still consider myself a Coldplay fan.

The move seems pretty in line with the philosophy of the band to me. To my ears Coldplay have always actively striven to sound as commercially accessible and sonically as widely appealing as possible. This just sounds like the next obvious move...

Chris Martin playing an emotional version of "Til Kingdom Come" at the funeral of Beau Biden, son of Vice President Joe Biden. Beau, like his dad, was an accomplished public server in Washington DC.

I think people get too irate about Coldplay.
They're not producing music with as much substance as their earlier output but every album since contains a number of good songs, and chances are that this one will too - personally I'm fine with that.

I don't know too much about the Bidens but they seem to have gone through some tough times. A lovely tribute here.
