There's a quote on the Live Forever page on Wikipedia regarding Noel actually writing Live Forever as a response to I Hate Myself and I Want to Die. "At the time . . . it was written in the middle of grunge and all that, and I remember Nirvana had a tune called 'I Hate Myself and Want to Die', and I was like . . . 'Well, I'm not fucking having that.' As much as I fucking like him [Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain] and all that shit, I'm not having that. I can't have people like that coming over here, on smack, fucking saying that they hate themselves and they wanna die. That's fucking rubbish. Kids don't need to be hearing that nonsense...Seems to me that here was a guy who had everything, and was miserable about it. And we had fuck-all, and I still thought that getting up in the morning was the greatest fuckin' thing ever, 'cause you didn't know where you'd end up at night. And we didn't have a pot to piss in, but it was fucking great, man" I think this is bullshit. He probably would have used the Sally Cinnamon thing if he came up with it for Don't Look Back in Anger.

I'm more inclined to believe that one as I do believe Noel had a liking for Nirvana, and given his reaction to Liam describing Kurt Cobain as "a sad c*nt who couldn't handle the fame" during a clash with an MTV executive IIRC where Noel described the Nirvana frontman as the "John Lennon of our generation" I would say he had knowledge and opinions on the band going back to pre-1994.

I have some vague memory from some Oasis biography that contained a story about Liam asking a staff or crew member to head down to a music shop to buy him a copy of Nirvana MTV Unplugged. He said he couldn't go down himself as he'd be mobbed by fans.
IIRC Liam was after being blown away by the bands cover of Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam.

Nirvana were 1000x better than Oasis, that much is for sure. Now it's easy to say that, they went on a high, the band ended still on their golden period, wonder what would have happened if Kurt hadn't shot himself and the band carried on for more years, this is a debate between Nirvana fanboys and Pearl Jam fanboys. If Liam/Noel had shot himself in 1996, Oasis would be gods too.

I'll take 'Definitely Maybe' over 'Nevermind' or 'In Utero' however I think there's a solid case for Nirvana being considered the better of the two bands. Of course there is the advantage/disadvantage (depending on how you look at it) of having less material however if we put that to one side here are 3 major areas I (i.e. me, not you) personally think Nirvana musically outstipped Oasis at. They are all pretty obvious so there are no surprises but it probably helps to explain why you'll likely find 'Nirvana>Oasis' the more popular opinion outside this messageboard.
Sonically Existing Both In & Outside of 'Mainstream' Appeal Listen to any Nirvana record and you'll find sweet pop songs sat side by side with some really quite aggressive tracks. The band had no hesitation to include noisy feedback guitar solos, weird vocal takes and lyrically some rather dark subjects. Nirvana was a band that easily pushed a more extreme sound than Oasis and this showed in their performances both live and on record. Oasis were a band that took many of the sounds of the most popular British bands of all time, whilst Nirvana by contrast emerged from the underground and took that sound with them (even if Butch Vig did slathered his sheen on them).
Instrumental Accomplishment Kurt and Noel are well known for being limited guitarists and I'll leave you folk to your own tastes (though personally I rate Kurt a fair bit higher than Noel) but there is no doubt that Krist and Dave had more musical ability than their contemporaries in Oasis. Not only this but they were allowed to pursue this and helped construct the bands songs. This blatantly shows when listening to any Nirvana record. Most Oasis songs sound like a band following Noel's instructions in the studio to jazz up a Noel demo.
Lyrics Kurt actually enjoyed writing and wrote a lot of poetry which later became Nirvana lyrics. Noel however has stated he never wanted to write lyrics, finding it an arduous task that takes time to fall into place. I think it's obvious to most that apart from a few minor examples most Oasis lyrics are simply competent.

He said he couldn't go down himself as he'd be mobbed by fans. IIRC Liam was after being blown away by the bands cover of Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam. Already posted this on the thread but he brought a copy himself during a pub crawl in Newport along with a jumper during his pub crawl in Newport whilst recording 'Some Might Say' along with a couple of jumpers and according to Paul Mathur "writer's cramp from signing about a million autographs" (Take Me There: Oasis The Story p117) all without getting into anything approaching a fight. He did ask Bonehead to buy him some CD's from HMV, the titles of which wasn't mentioned, before the Whitley Bay gig in Jan 1996 which the guitarist forgot. When the two had a minor argument about it Liam stated he couldn't go in himself because he was always being hassled by photographers whenever he went out, to which Noel followed by Bonehead and Guigsy started an "all together now, ahhhh!" chant with Liam half smilingly dismissing them as "fucking wankers" (Getting High: The Adventures of Oasis (Hewitt) p116)

I like some Oasis stuff from the first 2 albums and some of the b-sides from around then. I think everything after that is basically garbage apart from a couple of songs like Gas Panic and Go Let It Out. I still think Live Forever is pretty cheesy and overrated though..
