In fairness, the bar of expectations had been set pretty low, no? But I do agree with you. On the flip side, if the Mustique demos had have been leaked 10 years ago, then there would been a fresh round of wailing and moaning. This set seems so appealing because there's so much unreleased stuff on there. Can't fookin' wait!

To be honest I do not really like the rethink version yet.
DYKWIM was always this ONE "me against the world"-track. I love all the roughness of the original version from the throat cleaning at the beginnig to the wall of distortion by a billion guitar tracks. Having this track on my headphones its like "walking to the town to my favorite tune" and don' t even try to mess with me.
Dont get me wrong. I love Noels two 1997 radio acoustic versions. But violins don't work for me on this track, at least this goes for the studio version. But who knows, maybe its a grower?!

It's easier to listen to, this new version. Also, the strings and big drums remind me of Kashmir by Zeppelin. Which is definitely a sound they were going for. Only other tracks I'd be desperate for a re-think are Stand By Me and Don't Go Away - take off the horrible lead guitar on both!

I don't mind the guitar, but it does need to be mixed in more smoothly. The current versions are incredibly harsh.

it does ask the question of whether the extras on DM and WTSMG were lazy or whether that was genuinely the best they had, might be there just a lot more stuff kicking around from the BHN era, funny that theyve suddenly decided to include better stuff on the album that Noel likes least and is not as highly regarded as the first two.

Perhaps. Of course, an alternative argument to the relative scarcity of extras on the DM and WTSMG reissues compared to the BHN reissue is that elements could have been purposefully excluded for yet another reissue in the coming years. Also, an additional argument could be made based on the concepts of time and resources. While only a couple of years had passed since their first two album releases, Oasis became exponentially richer, which enabled them to tap into virtually unlimited resources. As such, Oasis (Noel) likely spent more time in studio settings with state of the art technology. In many cases, increased access to resources generally increases opportunities for more output.

Finally got a chance to listen to the NG Rethink of DYKWIM. It was a much clearer and spacier mix that almost made it sound like something from the SOTSOG era! I can hear acoustic guitar, bass, handclaps, and of course the strings much more prominently. Funnily enough, bringing up the acoustic guitar makes the Wonderwall similarities all the more apparent ( ), and I'm sure I've been hearing those strings in the pre-chorus for years! Though they are quite buried in the mix. However, I didn't like how the strings obscured the lead guitar in places (classic Dave Sardy style, eh? ), and the fantastic riffing wasn't brought out enough for my liking. Though when it was brought out, it sounded great, especially in that guitar solo! Despite the improved clarity, the rethink erases the insane bravado of the original album version. Though this was to be expected, I found myself missing the absolutely outrageous buildup of a grotesque wall of excess emanating from the speakers (especially in the intro, outro, and final chorus - my favorite part of the song!!!). This mix might be the best possible for the song from a producer's perspective, or Noel's perspective, but the layers upon layers of feedback, backwards bit, seagulls, etc, are part of what defined the BHN era, and removing a key aspect of the identity of DYKWIM ultimately results in a version that is not as good.... Regardless, it was still interesting to hear! But DYKWIM was never the BHN song that I thought needed improvements the most: I would have much preferred that Noel remixed Stand by Me and Don't Go Away so he could bring out more of the orchestra and expose the raw emotion of both. Maybe for the 30th anniversary reissue...... PS Today is a great day. It isn't every day that you wake up to 28 notifications.

D'You Know What I Mean? (NG's 2016 Rethink)
Those fucking strings sound like saws chewing through my eardrum.
My ears are hardwired to hear the original.
Nice to hear some bass, but BHN is all about Liam's vocals, man.
Yeah yeah-ah-haa.
Does the rethink sound too CD:UK? Maybe.

It stands to reason that as they garnered more fame and wealth that they were more likely to record extra things. Back in the mid-90's it was much more difficult and expensive to record. DM in particular was made on ZERO budget as Creation was tanking at the time. MG was done in two week and then pushed out quick. Personally, I don't think that there is much quality left from DM and MG eras. It doesn't surprise me at all that there is more around for 'Be Here Now'.

D'You Know What I Mean? (Noelly G's 2016 Rethink) (Official Audio)
"Top of The Pops? Nah, i'll go to CD:UK, got a better sound down there" ~ Liam Gallagher (fuck knows if that's what he actually said but it's close enough.)

I'm over the moon with the Mustique demos confirmed and the new tracks... and that 'rethink' is just insanely good. Blown away by the song that got me into Oasis way back when. That bass, the strings, that voice has room to breath. I literally was like a kid again hearing it. I'd only live for the whole album to get a rethink.

I'm gonna go run round my garden naked and roll in the mud. The fact that this thread has grown by only ten pages in 12 hours without your involvement shows some real laziness or incompetence on your part. But no need to overcompensate; I'd like to still have my eyes.
