Was having this conversation with my sister a couple of days ago and she claims neither Paul McCartney nor George Harrison deserve to be in the top 10..I might agree to a certain extent but..
anyway heres my top 10 musical legends. Keep in mind these are a biased meaning some people were left off because I just don't like their music at all and included others which I love:
1) Michael Jackson: Created music which is timeless..listen to billie jean or don't stop till you get enough. They still sound new. Millions look up to him and he's inspired many..like him or not I don't think there will ever be any solo artist as good as this man.
2) Elvis Presley: I don't really like his music. never really hit me tbh but I have spoken to people who were there during his time and they claim he was huge, he has tonnes of tribute acts dedicated to him and he's also sold tonnes of albums. You dont need to like him to see how big he was
3) John Lennon: Again I don't really like his solo work, not even imagine but his Beatles material was great and I love his voice. I think his death took his fame to a whole new level, had he not passed away his collaborations with Yoko would have gotten worse and worse but he had the voice, wit and sense of humour which made him what he is/was.
4) Paul McCartney: Love his music, character and his voice. Band on the run is a masterpiece. One of the last few living legends on earth.
5) Noel Gallagher: Imo one of the, if not the best song writers of all time. Wonderwall, Champagne Supernova, Stop crying your heart out, The importance of being idle, Cast no shadow..his b-sides shit on most bands a-sides..its just a pity he didn't make better album choices. Again one of the few living legends left on earth.
6) Liam Gallagher: My favourite frontman of all time, amazing voice at his best, great performances at his worth. Has the style arrogance which sets him apart from others. At his best he's proven he can be an amazing songwriter: I'm outta time, Songbird, The boy with the blues etc etc Another living legend.
7) George Harrison: I love his music: Give me love, while my guitar gently weeps, my sweet lord, isnt it a pity etc etc. An under-rated artist imo.
8) Freddie Mercury: Amazing voice and performer, of of the very few who can rival MJ with his live performances
9) Kurt Cobain: Not a big fan of his music and again I think his death made a huge difference over his fame but he did have a good voice and star quality.
10) Not sure about number 10 yet..

Liam Gallagher is far too volatile - I agree, truly great frontman at his best, but simply dire when poor. Plus his songs, although nice to listen to, are not of any great significance to me, and likewise with his live performances, when he's bad at songwriting, he's REALLY bad (Ain't Got Muffins - a song so bad it could single handedly destroy anyone's reputation).
I'd probably say bands like The Smiths and The Beatles brilliance overrides any solo artist's brilliance, so it's the group dynamic that is at heart here. A lot of these guys are better as a collective (love the Beatles and they are the greatest thing ever, but their solo work is patchy), so individually, I usually try to think of solo artists as that's how I gather how individually brilliant they are. I wouldn't put any of The Beatles in there as I don't think they are individually superior to the ones I go on to list, simply because their solo work is patchy (but no question there is greatness in the solo ventures).
So for me, No Bruce Springsteen, Kate Bush, David Bowie or Bob Dylan?
For my favourite individual geniuses, Kate Bush and Bruce Springsteen get my vote. Neither of them have released a bad album, and both still capable of churning out brilliance when they are in their 50s (Bush) or 60s (Springsteen). Kate Bush is a perfectionist whose albums incorporate many sounds that would be difficult to replicate live (hence the absence of live gigs - similar reason as to why The Beatles didn't perform later on) but as an artist, her albums are perfect and she gets it spot on all the time. I think for artists to be able to make an album as sonically rewarding to the point of it being impossible to play live is refreshingly unselfish. Simply because, many artists compromise a tune on their album so they can play it live - and live gigs is where the money is at. But I couldn't care less about not hearing those songs live - because music is timeless, gigs are not. The thrill and enjoyment of listening to a great album will always be there in your life, and for Bush to compromise live gigs for the benefit of an album experience is the most admirable trait in any artist I feel.
As for Springsteen, well, he is amazing live - nothing can touch him. I saw him last year and I can't believe he's 65. He has the energy of a 25 year old, and he doesn't let up for one minute throughout a 3 and a half hour show - a stadium gig all for £40. Simply amazing - musically great, lyrically great, and performance wise he's great - he's the most well rounded solo artist of all I think. And I don't have a bad word to say about him personally - there's no arrogance or pretence in anything he has ever done.

He's my favorite artist and agree with most of what you said especially from a live perspective.

Not in order
jimi hendrix Bob Dylan Kurt Cobain Buddy Holly Jim Morrison Chuck Berry BB King John Lennon Paul McCartney Elvis
* worthy mentions woody guthrie Little Richard Neil Young Janis Jolpin Ozzy Osbourne Hank Williams Willie Nelson Patsy Cline Johnny Cash Tom Petty Roy Orbison Steve Perry Bob Marley
Noel is Gallagher is or one my top favorites, but I can be realistic. Still after 20 years Oasis still one my favorite bands.
* In 20 years Dave Grohl will mentioned since he was with the Foo Fighters and Nirvana. Some might not like neither nirvana or Foo Fighters, but Dave is the hardest working musician in last 20 years.

Morrissey, The Smiths was amazing and his solo work is fantastic. Not all of it, some of it has been downright shameful. But The Smiths are amazing. One of the reasons why he's still held in such a high opinion. Although Vauxhall and I and Your Arsenal are awesome solo albums.
