Well that turned out well eh? Dubya and his wee lapdog Blair must be so proud of themselves.
The pair of them should be arrested and tried for crimes against humanity.

Iraq was virtually won when Bush left office in 2009. The whole undoing can be blamed on an entirely feckless Obama foreign policy which has also included embarrassments in Libya, Syria, Egypt, and Russia.

To suggest that Iraq was 'won' shows no understanding of the deep rooted problems in Iraq at all. For a start, the initial 'puppet' government in Iraq that the Bush administration pretty much convened over was entirely made of Shia politicians, and neglected Sunni influence. That tension has grown over the last decade or so, and the whole fucking lid has blown off the last week, with Sunni Muslims citing an overly aggressive Shia majority. I am not siding with Sunni or Shia, I am just showing you the incredible naiveity, ignorance and arrogance of Bush and Blair in thinking that such sectarian problems wouldn't arise. To think that Bush and Blair could 'build a democratic Iraq' in a time of deep rooted ancient hatreds is enough of a crime to go to jail simply for fucking idiocy.

Tell me again the moment when suicide bombings stopped in Iraq? Right, never. Tell me the moment when the Iraqi government took hold of it's own country? Right, never. When did roadside bombs end? Right, never. Iraq was never close to being won. Anyone who has legitimately studied the region would never say the Iraq war was virtually won. You know, because a civil war in 2006 is a sign of winning. Or how about the Iran/Iraq conflict of 2007. Up until Bush left office there was a civil war in Iraq that has continued since. It's the same civil war that's happening now. It's the same that's causing the uprising. But you know, it was virtually won. The Iraq is still one of the most disgusting chapters in American war history. A chapter that has still not found a justifiable reason. That's reckless foreign policy. But you know, that foreign policy was virtually won too I guess.

The ramifications are still taking place. Right, and 9/11 and Iraq (even when viewed separately) was due to the Clinton administration of non-action. Your next move will see you trace those two back to George H.W. Bush/Reagan, and we can continue playing this game. Sometimes you need to step up and take ownership. Obama decided to be president, he therefore decided to take on the responsibilities of his predecessor. He has continued the exact foreign policy of said predecessor, but not to the same extent, but more from his championing of "Leading from Behind." He's been ineffective, and the US Public is now finally seeing it. Sunni v Shia... Saudi Arabia v Iran... That's what it's all about. The wars in the land of Iraq and Syria are all part of a much bigger situation that will last for a very very long time.

The very first thing I learned in my Freshman course, Intro to International Politics, (many moons ago, mind) was that no one wants war, but the threat of war is necessary in order to avoid war (Key word: Brinksmanship), and for the threat to continue to work, it needs to be carried out as a last resort - otherwise it's just an empty threat which would ultimately serve no purpose. Semi-Paradoxical, if you will, but, theoretically, to say war is pointless is wrong.

Cause why would the Cheney's want to blacken their name more than it has been? Of course under the leadership of Dick Cheney the war was nearly won. Why would it not be? Of course we should believe the words of the same person who used their words to browbeat us into a war. Makes complete sense.

Yeah. I'm not going to take Dick Cheney at his word when he got pretty much everything wrong about Iraq in the first place. Over the years, he has justified the war at first by saying Saddam had WMDs with intent on attacking the US. That we would be "greeted as liberators." That Saddam had tried to buy uranium from Niger. That Saddam had ties with Al Qaeda and 9/11. All of these claims were bold-faced lies. Because of Bush, Cheney and the rest of that administration, at least 4,500 Americans and at least 500,000 Iraqis were killed. The war has costed us an estimated six trillion dollars (even though the Bush administration had predicted "between $100 and $200 billion"). That comes out to roughly $75,000 per household in America. Meanwhile, Halliburton earned nearly forty million dollars from the war. (If you don't remember, Cheney was Halliburton's ex-CEO.) Obama was given a huge mess when he first became President in 2009. On top of that, he had an entire political party who did everything they could to make his job as difficult as possible. I'm not saying Obama has been perfect, but for someone like you, L4E, to criticize him while openly praising and defending the Bush administration shows how willingly ignorant you are about not only politics, but the world around you. Iraq was virtually won when Bush left office in 2009. The whole undoing can be blamed on an entirely feckless Obama foreign policy which has also included embarrassments in Libya, Syria, Egypt, and Russia. That is some high quality, grade A bullshit right there and you know it. Wilkie was right you Americans are arrogant pricks We're not all like that. That said...

BOOM! (No pun intended), incredibly good read and analysis. Obama is out of his depth. It also shows you how complex and important a fully US committed and engaged foreign policy is, and how sophomoric the "War is bad, Fuck Bush" mantra truly is. This is one of the best things I have ever read.... It is also conceptually consistent with what I learned in International Relations while an undergrad at GW.... I remember one professor once drew a map of the World on the board - he then proceeded to draw arrows from the US to all the nations the US was engaged with - militarily, or otherwise (financially, humanitarian, etc). He then said, as he wiped all those arrows - and there were too many to count - off the board: "Now imagine if the US became disengaged. - The world would go to hell." The following article highlights that PERFECTLY. There's also the subtext of concepts such as MAD and lessons of the Cold War. - It's a rather loaded and complex article, for its considerable brevity. (Oh the joys if I can overcome my anxiety and attend Queen Mary University of London for International Relations' Masters in September! 2 months! Eek...!) #PaysToBeSmart www.hoover.org/research/coming-world-disorder
