Does anybody know what kind of 'megaphone-y' distant vocal effect that is and how to achieve it? I know it's used on the finished record but it's much clearer in the demo and I love it.

You could probably achieve the sound with distortion and reverb but I'm certainly not an expert. He's probably singing a certain way too.

Considering he supposedly has an extensive microphone collection, it could be something similar to Danelectro's Silver Bullet microphone. It definitely gives a very megaphone like sound on recordings.

Plug your mic in your guitar amp, add a little distortion and voila, record that

Gotta say, this track was my favorite on the whole high flying birds album. But hey, I'm a good rebel fan. So what do I know.

You can use a band-pass filter to get this type of sound.
