Jesus Christ the production on this album is absolutley dire. It's damn shame, too, because it's actually an incredible album, with Noel's best song writing since WTSMG (I'm serious with that sentence, he's back on form, and how!).
There's no dynamics, the drums plod along, and it's all very flat. Almost, ALMOST, very Heathen Chemistry-esqe in the production.
Sardy was fine for DBTT, but he absoltuely fucked over both DOYS and NGHFB. I don't get it. How can anyone, especially a supposed professional, not realize how utterly shit both DOYS and NGHFB sound? Ugh.
I hope Noel sacked Sardy for the new album. I'd do anything for an Owen Morris, BHN-Style produced album.
ANY-FUCKING-THING.

Can someone please re-master this thread? It's awfully flat and dire and the OP is kinda just plodding along.

I love the DOYS production. Especially BIU and TT(the choir should've been a bit louder though) Can't understand how u can compare it to NGHFB, which is as u said, very flat.

I actually would rate the production of DOYS as one of the best I've heard on any record of any band... I prefer the classicism. I have to say I don't really like the sound of the HFB band in general.

Why is everyone moaning about the production..... it's pretty decent imo, and you think the production on Be Here Now is good? FFS!

Remastering wouldn't alter the production anyway you would need a remix surely

Yeah, I don't know what they were thinking. Destroyed EOTR in my opinion. Other things were a bit over the top too...probably why it did well. Mainstream likes that right now.

It's just too polished I think. The plodding drums are more a problem with Noel's arrangement. They did a really bad job of If I Had A Gun though, both in terms of arrangement and sound. No idea why they thought it'd shouldn't just go straight to the chorus from the verse like it did in the soundcheck version. Those ahh-ahh bits don't belong there after the verse.

[/b] agreed 100% could have been a beautiful tune. instead Noel goes safe.....and makes the song good but not great.

Agreed about IIHAG (still love it tho), but EOTR is brilliant

I still think IIHAG is right up there with Noel's 90s best. Incredible song, but they fucked over the sound. THOSE DRUMS, JESUS FUCKING CHRIST THEY PLOD.

I hope Noel will rethink his live band also during second album. I hated that drummer, used to ruin every fuckin' song with this bass drum.

Remastering would do nothing to save this album. You'd need a proper re-mixing and maybe even re-recording too.

Just thought I'd post this link here, as it seems appropriate to the topic of the album's production. It's a critique of the mix of The Death of You and Me, written by Mike Senior for the May 2012 issue of Sound on Sound magazine. I've linked to the forum thread in which the article was discussed, as he also makes brief reference to AKA... What a Life in the second post. www.soundonsound.com/forum/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=983255For what it's worth I still rate the songs and appreciate the production, although I felt the CD was overly compressed (a shortcoming of many modern releases). I have heard a needledrop of the vinyl version, which I prefer, as it seems a bit more dynamic to me. Just my 2p's worth Looking forward to the next album!

My point with DOYS was stuff like the Lennon clip in IOT being inaudible (stupid idea anyway, but at least have it work if you're going to fucking do it), and the choir being non-existent on The Turning. This is a serious question: How didn't Sardy, a supposed professional producer, not realize those problems? I seriously don't fucking understand. I really don't. They're so blatantly obvious.

I'd rather we just have a Dave Sardy free production for album #2. I think my gut tells me he won't be involved this go around.

I disagree...only because if there WAS another producer involved, I think we would have heard rumblings about that. The lack of news makes me think everything is status quo.

Also to get this thread on topic, the thing that really kills this album is the FUCKING DRUMS. It's the same un-imaginative, inexplicably loud, mid-tempo thumping on every damn track. It's a shame because I really love the songs Noel wrote...but I just can't listen to this album.
