After a Blistering debut album, maybe a million selling, critically acclaimed work then followed up by a miserable dour affair.
What follow up albums were you truly disappointed in that maybe turned you off a band or singer or just really saddened you? Doesn't have to be after a debut album but maybe a career high point or something.
Franz Ferdinand- You Could Have It So Much Better
Looking back on it now it's maybe not a truly awful album but this wasn't a great follow up to a amazing album (still think their debut is a masterpiece), it really knocked me off the band's career that I haven't quite got back on. It has a few good tracks like The Fallen, Walk Away and I like Do you Want to but it's no Take me Out. The band themselves never quite recovered although their are fan's of the other works, I think their patchy at best. Sad as they were awesome for a while.
The Vines- Winning Days
This was so misjudged and felt like left over tracks or hastily written material, after a great debut in Highly Evolved. Winning Day's really stunk the joint out although in the title track they had one of their best tracks. But like Franz Ferdinand they never quite recovered from the fall from grace.
Coldplay- Mylo Xyloto
After probably one of their best albums to date in Viva la Vida, they followed it up with this below par attempt at wanting to break into the pop market, and even though it sold and went number 1 everywhere. No true Coldplay fan can say this isn't their worst work in a artistic sense. Good to hear they are getting back on track with the material released so far from their new upcoming release but Mylo Xyloto will haunt them forever.

1. "What's The Story Morning Glory" by Oasis
If it weren't for "Some Might Say", "Don't Look Back In Anger", and "Morning Glory" i honestly would never listen to this soft radio-friendly pop album ever again.....the most disappointing 2nd album of my lifetime probably.
2. "Antics" by Interpol
Their first record "Turn On The Bright Lights" was one of the best debut albums around with shades of Joy Division....and the 2nd sounded like an Interpol cover band.
3. "Second Coming" by The Stone Roses
Not a bad record....but lacked any kind of magic whatsoever.

Antic's is a good Call Syed, totally lacked the balls of their debut, They've never recovered after that.
Second coming isn't a bad one but after following the best album of all time (well for me it is anyway) it was a disappointing. Far too much guitar wankery though.
WTSMG ain't too bad. I'd add Cast No Shadow and Champagne Supernova to that list but it makes me laugh when anyone put's it over Definitely Maybe though, silly talk.

I really like all of Franz Ferdinand's album - the first one is one of my favourite albums of all time. None of them since their debut have ever had the massive singles of the first one, but I don't think they've ever released a bad album. I thought their recent one last year was brilliant personally. When you reach the heights of their debut, it's difficult to replicate that.
Massive disappointments - surely Second Coming. It's just a Led Zeppelin rip off. None of the swagger or melodies of the first album, god knows what they were up to in the five years between the first one.
I agree with Mylo Xyloto - biggest sell out ever. And the Rihanna duet, I shudder to think of it.
Empire - Kasabian. I'm not a fan of them at all and this album started it, sick fed up of them and their laddish antics and average albums, but that first album is very very good. So much promise and it came at a time when such awful indie pub rock dominated, so the electronica influences were very welcome. That first album promised much, without being truly great, and there was a belief they would walk the walk. The second one is terrible, I like Empire and that's about it and ever since this album, Serge and Tom have gone from being confident to downright unbearable Gallagher impersonators lacking any wit, while the music has progressively got worse, turning them into an absolute nightmare.

To each their own with regard to viewing WTSMG as a "disappointment" but your definitely in the minority there. Looking back I'm really proud of Oasis for NOT making a DM Part 2. Noel's songwriting took a HUGE leap forward in terms of maturity and structure. I rank DM and WTSMG equality. Some prefer rock/pop and others prefer pop/rock.
Yuck - Glow and Behold It isn't a bad album but I really really enjoyed their first. I thought it was one of the best of 2011. This one was pretty safe and stale.
Wavves- Afraid of Heights King of the Beach was really good. This one was just too generic and grungy for me. It is like a poor mix of Nirvana and Weezer. A couple good songs but not all that great.
Best Coast - The Only Place Their first album is just about perfect in my mind. This one is too clean and lacks the songwriting that the first one had. They sound best when their songs are 2-3 min and covered in surfy lofi haze.
Arctic Monkeys - Humbug I know Humbug gets a lot of love from the critics and some have it as their favorite Arctic Monkeys album but it is by far my least favorite from them. Took way too many pages from Josh Homme and arctic monkeys ended up sounding like a Queens of the Stone Age cover band. It isn't horrible but it just doesn't sound like a natural arctic monkeys record. They incorporated the influences on Humbug better on their later two albums.
Band of Horses - Infinite Arms Their first two albums are pretty nice listens, nothing super awesome but they were consistent and had a couple great songs on there. This one is just really boring and bland. Almost dad rock in a way. I previewed the one after this and it sounded worse. Guess they've gone to shit.

I can see why many don't like Humbug but it was a record that was needed to be made still think Cornerstone, Crying Lighting, Secret Door, Jeweller's hand, Dance little Liar are great songs. Not my favourite AM album but I still like it a lot.
I wasn't taking a pot shot at WTSMG think it's a very good but flawed album, how they left of Aquiensce, The Masterplan of the album is still crazy too me. Not in the same ballpark as DM for me really.

I'll do two lists;
Follow-ups to Debuts Bloc Party- A Weekend In The City; Not a bad album but nowhere near the quality of the first. They tried to get to political and moody on this one and I much prefered the Indie Disco greatness of the first
Manic Street Preachers- Gold Against The Soul; Their first is one of the most exhillirating Debuts ever. This sounded like a generic US Indie band, thankfully they resdiscovered their unique Britishness of their 3rd album and have hardly put a foot wrong in the 20 years since,
Also notable mentions to The Vines, The Strokes, BRMC
Also can sort of understand the WTSMG comment as it isn't in the same league of DM but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's disappointing. It sold shit loads and has some of their best songs
Follow-ups Stereophonics- Just Enough Education to Perform; Absolutely love their first two albums but this was drab. Kelly went all country and it didn't suit him. One of the Phonics' endearing qualities in their early days was their lyrics about local life in a working class village in Wales. It was odd hearing them talking about Vegas and alike
Feeder-Pushing the Senses; Loved Comfort in Sound, it's one of my favourite albums of the 21st Century but this was boring as hell.
The Cooper Temple Clause- Make This Your Own; Fucking loved their first two albums, a great mix of Oasis, Primal Scream, Prodigy with post rock influences, everything I love. Then they took a 4 year gap and came back with a below par album where the singer only sings on 4 or 5 tracks. Gutted when I heard this after all that time
Also notable mentions to U2- Zooropa, Guns 'n' Roses- The Spaghetti Incident and Pink Floyd- Anything after the Wall
Edit; Also good call on Snow Patrol 100 Million Suns, that was dire compared with Eyes Open and Final Straw (haven't heard what they did before that)

Now I prefer it to Vitalogy. Has a much different vibe than the first three albums and I think it put people off at first. I recommend you go back and listen to it if you havent heard it in a long time. Follow up albums Life After Death- Notorious BIG Celebrity Skin-Hole

Disagree. Arguably belongs in the discussion with The Bends, OK computer, and Kid A. Infinitely better than Hail to the Thief and King of Limbs

Coming off an average and bloated Hail To The Thief, this album had nothing but tune after tune after tune. Very surprising.

Second Coming was a great album, at the wrong time unfortunately. I admit I'm not a fan of all the Led Zep shit but there are some absolute killer tunes there, i.e Love Spreads, Breaking Into Heaven and Ten Storey Love Song...
If the album had been released in 1991 with a world tour to support, it would be a completely different story.
