Of course there is BHN that we all know and love. There will never be another record like it. Perfectly captures its time. But I'm listening to the Clash's Sandinista (originally released as a 3LP album for those who don't know) and thinking about how much flack this album has got for being overblown, overly ambitious, and over the top. And its great. It's not for everyone and its not very "accessible" or full of hits but if you like the Clash, its a great, very prolific portrait of the band post London Calling. I think Joe Strummer once said maybe it would have been better as a single album, or even an EP but thats beside the whole point of Sandinista. Whatever it is, it just is. And it's great. What are some of your favourite big bloated albums?

I love over-the-top albums, the bigger and more dramatic the better!
The Wall is my favourite album of all time and some would say thats very bloated,
I've also got a lot of time for Achtung Baby, Sams Town (yes its only the Killers but it's very OTT), anything Glasvegas have done
Not sure if you can class it as 'bloated' but I'm a real sucker for 'post-rock' Godspeed..., Explosions in the Sky, Caspian etc

I realise most of this forum isn't all that into Hip-Hop but... This bad boy right here. Maybe not so much 'overblown' although some of the production on some songs clearly doesn't fit with the overall mood and concept of the album, this album was practically panned by mainstream fans and critics in comparison to Eminem's earlier work. However I think this has more to do with the fact that people just straight up didn't get it. They wanted another 'Lose Yourself' or 'The Way I Am' instead they got shit about serial killers, Kim Kardashian being a man, more Christopher Reeves jokes and the accents. The accents are in my opinion most peoples problem with this album, I admit when I first heard the album I thought 'what the fuck? really? you're goin to do this all the way through? Fuck this.' etc. however when I started properly paying attention to the lyrics it sunk in, this album is fuckin amazing. Take the track 'Stay Wide Awake' arguably one of the best songs he has ever written, but most people would say they had never heard of it (sound familiar? ) the whole song is about a serial killer and what he gets up to one night, but he sticks on the same rhyming scheme for the whole song, which if you don't follow Hip-Hop, is fuckin difficult to do but because he does it in an accent people just didn't give it a chance. In that sense I would say its like Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants, not only because people didn't understand it and it was given an average response, but also it made Eminem scrap the planned follow up in favour of Recovery. Which is without argument the most mainstream bullshit album that Eminem has ever released, it's almost the worst album he has released (again, sound familiar?) but the singles did extremely well and it was given a very positive reception in the mainstream media and by mainstream fans. However, the majority of the album is great, with possibly only one or two exceptions. It also features the last song on an Eminem album, 'Beautiful' co. produced by Eminem and Jeff Bass (of the bass brothers, the geniuses that have been partly responsible for some of Eminems best work) which was so good that even Pitchfork couldn't shit on it but again, people just don't remember it because they just don't bother with the album as a whole, which is a real shame, as I consider this to be one of Eminem's best albums so far.

Sam's Town comes to mind. It's a really nice album that is bursting at the seams with bombast. That and Hot Fuss are a great one two punch. A lot of bands try to do the springteen thing and it just comes off as weak or self serious. With Sam's Town, The Killers unashamedly reached for the sky on a rocket full of cliche's and made one of the better "classic" rock albums of the 00's. Bones is one of the best pop songs in the past 8 years.
Janelle Monae is an artist that just packs her songs with so many ideas that it can be overwhelming but it usually comes out great. The ArchAndroid is still one of my favorite albums.
I'd throw in Second Coming into the mix as well. It's not a great album but it has a lot of gems underneath the bloated production and structure. The only song I can't stand is The Foz. Tears has one of my favorite guitar solos. Yeah they took the Led Zeppelin influence too far but I wouldn't say that the album is a disaster. Its a decent listen when the time is right.
Real Emotional Trash by Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks is filled with expertly done stoner jams. It's great to hear Malkmus shred on the guitar.
Wowee Zowee by Pavement is like the White Album in a lot of respects. Its messy but its brilliant and probably the most "pavement-y" album out there. Gonna have to listen to it to that today. Rattled by the Rush and Grounded blow me away every time I listen to them.

From the man himself. The White Album is awesome no doubt, but Macca's astronomical ego is on full show here, it's not hard to see where a lot of the fighting between the Beatles came from near the end

I think Second Coming is the obvious choice here. I also like The Guns n Roses' Chinese Democracy and love the most 80s parts of Springsteen's Tunnel Of Love. The Verve's Forth is great and I like The Enemy's second album as well.

I hear the words overblown or bloated and I immediately think of Be Here Now

I tend to associate this album with Be Here Now... Great album, when many say that it was only with Britpop that the Beatles Influence came to the fore. I always point to this album, the title track is amazing. As is the whole album.
Be Here Now is the king of the castle for over blown bloated albums but for me it's their last truly great album.
Sams Town is still the best thing The Killer's did after that they went down hill.
The person Achtung baby from U2, sorry that's nowhere over blown or bloated, now Rattle and Hum that's overblown and bloated.

All the best tracks are lennons apart from Revolution 9, god urgh!!! Can't really agree with this point. Yes it includes some of Lennon's best work but McCartney contributed Back in the USSR, Helter Skelter and Blackbird which for me are probably three of the best tracks on the album, Also Harrison's finest moment is on this record with 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' It's nobody's album for me, its the 3 of them at the peak of their songwriting and artisic vision writing individually but coming together to create something very special

The beauty of the White Album is that it is all over the place with no one really dominating the record. To me that is it's charm. We see all sides of the Beatles. It's great.

Dear Prudence is my all time favourite Beatles tune it's sheer genius imo and what he manages to do in two minutes and forty-five seconds on Happiness Is A Warm Gun is pretty incredible. And yes, let's forget about Revolution 9... Macca's output, barring Helter Skelter feels like him just indulging himself in his music hall whimsy to me

You beat me to it Lennon2217 about G 'N' R. Despite the fact that the entire trilogy of Don't Cry, November Rain, and Estranged are all bloated and representative of Illusion I and II (including their music videos, especially Estranged with Axl and the dolphin!) I still love them. I personally think November Rain is sort of genius in its overwrought-ness.

Although I don't love the album particularly, I think Humbug by the Arctic Monkeys falls into this category to an extent. I like the album, but I remember people slating it at the time. It was a decent album, but didn't deserve the flak it received.
