I was still never clear on this. I know they said they wanted to be close to The Beatles on a band list, but why choose the name Beady Eye? It's sort of unappealing, I always thought so.
What reminded me of this was I was out with my Beady Eye shirt on and someone stopped and asked what my shirt meant. I told them it was the name of a band and he thought it was weird.
Then I started thinking, if I saw Beady Eye on a list, would I even bother to check them out if I had no knowledge of the members history? Probably not.
What do you all think?

Maybe I'm older and it's a term that was used more in my day, I am only guessing maybe you cats use it I don't know . But when we were kids in the 80 s and did coke for a few nights in a row , then did some ludes to calm down and drink a few , we had the small red eye look. And people would say. Hey man your fucking beady eyed , you musta had a killer weekend. Or some shit to that effect ...maybe they got a old soul

They said once they chose it because it was their own project and they were going to be keeping a close eye on it. That's what keeping a beady eye on something means.
Nothing to do with drugs or anything.
It just means keeping a very keen eye on a something.

I like both Kalas's and GD's explanation, honestly.
I have definitely grown used to the name. And if I can like 'The Beatles' or 'Oasis', I can like 'Beady Eye'.

Stupid name. But most of them are. Even the good ones. Rolling Stones, Beatles etc. Mindless shite.
Led Zep are one of precious few bands with a cool sounding name.
As long as the music sounds better than the name, nobody gives a shit.

The poll needs a "meh" answer. It doesnt really matter what theyre calked, Beady Eye is pretty neutral. I went with "good".

I like it. don`t get the people, that "don`t get" bandnames. It`s just a name, not every name has to have a background or has to make sense. I really love some bandnames, that play with words like The Dandy Warhols or the Brian Jonestown Massacre, but most of the times I really don`t care for it. if you get to know the band, the name will automatically grow into the sound of them so you get used to it, if you like the sound.

I don't think there is any particular reason behind it, just something that sounded good to them at the time. I think it's a bit naff but they could have chose far worse.

Here's a very tenuous link... I have just been reading David Cavanagh's book on Creation Records, subtitled "My Magpie Eyes are Hungry for the Prize". This is quoted from the fifteenth release by Creation- [CRE015], which was The Loft's “Up The Hill & Down The Slope”. The lyrics, by Pete Astor, start off with...
Oh, my magpie eyes are hungry for the prize Give me the money and I'll shoot it right between the eyes My greedy eyes, my beady eyes - they swivel and they stare Thinking of the bright things; I might just get them there

Good link but defo to common to look to an obscure reference to explain

I personally think with beady eye being beady eye it be an off the cuff comment from Liam he thought sounded great etc tho could be anything like many said most band names really mean nothing

Much appreciated. Yes, would be interesting to find out the true source of the inspiration behind the Beady Eye name... like you said, it's most likely that someone used it in conversation and the phrase caught Liam's ear. I guess if we asked the band there might be several different explanations on how they decided on the name, similar to Oasis (didn't Noel want to say in early interviews that the band was named after a cool clothes shop in Manchester, but early on Liam said that it was actually named after the Swindon Oasis leisure centre...?). Either way, good name for a band

Yes oasis story does go via a poster in their bedroom (maybe on the wonderwall ) for the Swindon oasis, and the cool trainer / clothes shop in Manc (Which may be referenced also in 'love is the law' by the seahorses .. Oasis is a shop with shoes so got they were sure to blow your mind)

Thanks for the reminder... brings back memories of how Britpop (for want of a better word) ruled the airwaves back in 1997. Didn't Liam co-write that song with John Squire? I remember liking the Oasis reference in there... the song got a huge amount of airplay on Radio 1 and, if I remember right, it was released in the build up to Be Here Now, maybe even before we'd heard D'You Know What I Mean? (will have to check that!), when the anticipation for new Oasis songs or news about their album was huge. Around the same time there was also Liam's cameo appearance on Nothing Lasts Forever by Echo and the Bunnymen, supplying the backing vocals. Another great tune.
