This dude is the kinda of guy who I think I'd appreciate more in a live setting. His roots kinda of entail that he's a killer live performer. The energy is obviously there, but his songwriting is a bit faceless to be me. Good melodic chops but the melodies sound overly familiar/safe. In general probably not my cup of tea, alt-folk is hit and miss, but dude can play a lot of stuff and he is at least a decent songwriter, if not particularly memorable. Maybe its because I'm American that I'm not feeling the vibes?

I became a fan of his after his last record. After seeing him live, I became a diehard. It was one of the best concerts I'd ever seen.
I'm seeing him for the third time in September and can't wait.

MASSIVE Frank fan here. Got into his music just after the release of England Keep My Bones, so pretty much a newbie. Seen him twice, once solo and the other with the full band. Met him after the solo gig & had a chat & he signed the SIFTW vinyl I'd bought from the merch stall and also the night's gig poster !!! btw, dunno if anyone here is a member of the Frank Turner Army on facebook, check it out, cool page. The page mmods organised a piss-up in London at the weekend, Frank got wind and put in an appearance, only went and bloody brought along the new album and gave the crowd a play-back of it, how fuckin' cool is that................

Okay, this is really fucking great. But it's so typical for him. I'm actually not that excited yet for his new album, which is kinda weird cause I really love his other stuff. I guess it's just because I've got a lot of things going on in my life atm so that I can't really get myself into this "euphoric anticipation mode". I'm sure it'll change though. I'll definitely buy the album and give my review after a couple of weeks in this thread! Can't wait to see him live again. He never diappoints, born to be on stage, really...which reminds me of his song Balthazar Impresario that deals pretty much exactly with this kind of topic. Check it out, itwasn'g even a regular album track. Just like Wanderlust, which is one of my favourite songs from him. Did I say that I love artists that surprise you with obscure tracks that are even better than some of the singles? Well...I'm on an Oasis forum so maybe that speaks for itself

First listen: Unsure. Disappointed. Hoping it's a grower, and I'm sure it will be to some extent. The middle of the album lost me a bit. Will be giving it all more listens, though.
Song For Josh as the closer is actually rather touching - especially so as I was frequently visited the 9:30 Club in DC that Josh Burdette (who comitted suicide in 2013) worked as a manager of.

Get Better and Next Storm are the two best songs on the album. Good songs they are, but that makes the album very lacking. Very disappointed. 6/10.

Yesterday I was a little disappointed but this morning I'm liking it a lot more, 7/10 for me now.
I agree with Mr. Beady above about the two standout songs. Mittens and The Opening Act of Spring are also great.
Fingers crossed I'll see him live again at some point in the near future.

The reviews are suggesting it's the worst Frank Turner album, and by quite some distance. It's not bad, but I was expecting much more from this release. www.metacritic.com/person/frank-turner

It's not bad, but I was expecting much more from this release. www.metacritic.com/person/frank-turnerCompared to the standards of 2008's Love Ire & Song, arguably his best album, I'd agree that this falls short of the mark. Nevertheless, I'm enjoying it. It's one of those albums where half of the songs are great and the other half are less so, which means I can never make my mind up what I think of it as a whole.

I've been trying to like this album so much, but I can't. It's just so fucking mediocre. Get Better, and Next Storm are fantastic. It's exactly what I thought this album would be filled with. But those two are the best on the album, and by quite some distance. The album is just very safe and inoffensive. I'm hesitant to use this analogy as it's not that bad, but it feels very Heathen Chemistry-ish to me. I also think Silent Key is atrocious. Reviews like that track, but it's just so trite. Ugh, Frank, this was such a let down. scott1, thoughts?

You know how all the good songs were at the start and all the bad ones were at the end? The strongest material on this album is all in the first half of the record - I'm talking The Opening Act Of Spring, Get Better, The Next Storm, Mittens, even Glorious You. Past this point, you find the sort of songs that definitely are songs, but they don't have much going for them. Demons, Josephine, Silent Key, these just haven't clicked with me at all. The exception is Song For Josh at the end, that's such a heartfelt song. But overall, there's a huge disparity between the best songs on this album and the worst, it's really uneven.

Just came back from holiday and I'm ashamed to say I still haven't bought his new album. Your reviews make me a bit sad. What I actually wanted to say was: I just came across this little gem: Fantastic song (even more so in this stripped down version) and as a fan of both The Gaslight Anthem and Frank I'm very happy about this Let's hope The Gaslight Anthem won't be away for long! Moments like these for me are what music is about. By their "performance" you see that both Brian and Frank totally are in love with what they do.

Moments like these for me are what music is about. By their "performance" you see that both Brian and Frank totally are in love with what they do. Have you listened to Frank Turner's new album yet?....Thoughts? After a few listens, this is my impression: The Angel Islington - not so impressed with this one, definitely not his best opener compared to his earlier albums Get better - it's a good song, I think it'll grow on me, I kind of don't like the heavy, piercing guitar sound on this. Some parts I really like, others not so much. The next storm - fantastic, up with the best on Tape Deck Heart for me. The opening act of spring - nice song, not too sure yet if I just like it or if it has the potential to do more for me, it'S very pleasurable to listen to Glorious You - sounds kind of familiar, not too sure about this one yet (again) Mittens - I like the imagery of mittens and gloves, it's definitely a song that I remembered after the first listen, I think it'll grow on me Out of breath - I suppose there'll be a lot of energy involved live during this one. The piano is fun, not too sure about the singing melody, you know this "out of breea-ea-eath" I think I'll have to hear this live before I can judge it Demons - I already like it, but need to listen more often before a final statement, it has the potential to become one of my favourites Josephine - had it ringing in my ears after the first listen, gets better everytime I listen to it, one of my favourites on the record atm, I don't really like the "wohohos" at the beginning though, I have to say Love Forty Down - seems kind of special, I like it, Silent Key - somehow sounds a lot like Mittens at the beginning, don't really have an opinion yet on this one, it's not bad, but I'm not fully convinced of the woman's voice that appears later Song For Josh - I knew this one already, cause he wrote and played it shortly after Josh's death, it's certainly very personal and probably deserves to be on the album because of that

May I just mention that his gig on Hannover one week ago was brilliant? It was the perfect gig. What made the whole thing even greater was that he played a free(!) instore acoustic gig that lasted half an hour before the actual gig, in which he played Substitute, Balthazar Impresario and a slightly different version of Live fast, die young amongst others. On top of that (as if that wasn't enough), you could meet him after that tiny gig. He shook my hand (and every other person's that approached him) and was the nicest you could imagine. He asked for my name as I gave him my ticket to sign and asked whether I'm coming to the (main) gig later. Such a gentle person. After that, we took a picture together. Actually, his tour manager took it, she was just standing there, taking everybody's phones and making dozens of photos What a day! I was as happy as I was when I met Noel in Düsseldorf last year. I'm already looking forward to seeing Frank play in Cologne in one week. Secretely, I'm hoping for another instore gig because he's also played them in Leipzig and Berlin (iirc).
