John Frusciante's one of my favorite musicians....his work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers is amazing, particularly on the older albums.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik is one of my personal all-time favorite albums.
but yes, his solo work can be a little weird.
Thanks.

I like a lot of his solo stuff, too. However I've only liked a few tracks in his electronic phase. He did say that this album will be his final statement in this phase. Who knows what will come next...

Frusciante?
I LOVE his guitar playing.
Yeah.
But his solo work is weak.

I've been looking for a specific quote by Anthony Keidis commenting on John leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it's very touching and eloquent.
John's an artist in every sense of the word...like, I don't think he really functions on a normal societal level, which I admire and also share some of those same traits.
God bless.

I've always loved his work on this tune, his playing, the way he's layered all those guitar tracks and even his backing vocals. Dude's a legend.

Dosed is absolutely amazing.
By the Way, as a whole, is awesome. The standout tracks have to be Can't Stop, Don't Forget Me, and Venice Queen (what a closer!). Universally Speaking and Tear are as Beatlesesque as the Chilis ever got, Midnight has a beautiful orchestra section, and the last half of the album, which includes Midnight, Tear, and VQ, shows the experimentation that went on in this period.
The follow-up to By the Way, Stadium Arcadium, has some of Frusciante's best guitar work & overall work with the band. For the ultimate proof of that, I'd have a listen to Wet Sand, Hey, and Turn it Again. There's some awesome awesome playing in those three songs, among others, on there.
To me, it's like the Chilis' 21st century version of BSSM. Obviously, there isn't an album quite like BSSM, but SA has the quality playing & quality songs, in general, to make a comparison. I love both the albums, but SA's my favorite because it's the one that introduced me to the band.
About John's solo work, it's rather out there, but I must say, Wayne is absolutely fantastic. It's a tribute to a friend of his who had passed away. According to John, Wayne was his favorite person he would play guitar for in the audience & he loved long guitar solos. So, because of the friendship & what not, he made it in honor of him, and what a fitting tribute, really. The song (posted below) is essentially a 10 minute guitar solo, and every minute of it is wonderful.

^^ World71R, I am really enjoying that track. What are some Frusciante songs/albums you recommend?

Shadows collide with people is the one I recomend the most, it's the first album he recorded in a series of 6 albums in 6 months. If you like more electronic/acid jazz based stuff his recent output(I liked Letur Lefr EP but not everything that came afterwards) might be for you, but I know it isn't for me The album that screams guitar playing is The Empyrean(Before The Begining is a track like Wayne in a sense that is a long jam that feels like one guitar solo) which he recorded shortly after Stadium Arcadium, there's a track(or two? cant remember right now) where Johnny Marr plays guitar.

Both of those are good.
DC EP is a lot like his work with the Chilis. Dissolve is a really good track from that one, and has some similarities to Californication era B-side Quixoticelixer, which is also a good one, too.
Curtains is also rather interesting, as he recorded it in his living room. Not to mention, he also did it with his RHCP successor, Josh Klinghoffer, whom John took under his wing. The album is more acoustic, but doesn't lose the experimental touch Frusciante brings to his albums.

Funny to see the timing of this topic and reminds me my friend Gary, whom passed away March of 2013 and his birthday was Dec 1st. He was a huge John Frusicante fan. Topic reminds me of him.
