Seriously, how great were these guys? Take away the garish costumes and any narrow minded preconceptions about them being so camp, and leave it to pure musicianship and songwriting and they were up there with the best. Quite easily one of the greatest acts of all time, that is in no doubt.
In terms of greatest melodists, they are up there with The Beatles and Noel himself personally, and Agnetha and Frida are two of the finest singers to have ever graced planet earth.
The kings and queens of pop - Michael Jackson can get lost! I just can't believe anyone who says they hate ABBA - that is like saying you hate music.

Yeah, it's all about ABBA Gold, I can't name any of their studio albums but ABBA Gold is one of the greatest hits collection of all time. Heck, even Noel loves ABBA. You can see why - as a master songwriter himself, he knows what it takes to make a great tune. This is what separates him from the amateurs (Beady Eye) by recognising ABBA's brillaince. www.gigwise.com/news/3112/noel-gallagher-has-an-affinity-with-abba

I don't mean to be harsh - competent on their own, but compared to Noel, they sound like amateurs, but in my opinion, the vast majority of songwriters today sound amateurish comapared to Noel. My point still remains that the master melodist he is recognises great great pop, and to be fair, his influences are far wider ranging than many people give him credit for.

Even not being a big fan you can't really doubt the brilliance of their songwriting.

They made instantly memorable pop classics, and the playing and production on their records is fantastic. I must admit I have only really heard their greatest hits, never having listened properly to the albums. I understand they are getting deluxe edition reissues at the moment, so maybe that could be a good opportunity to check the albums out. I have heard from discussions on the Steve Hoffman forum that the bonus tracks and re-mastering are spot on, which is not always the case on catalogue reissues. As Matt said, Noel admires their work, and in an early interview for MOJO he cited SOS as one of the five songs he wished he'd written. High praise indeed! MOJO: Five songs you wish you'd written? Noel: 'Up the Hill Backwards by David Bowie. Every single Beatles song. To Love Somebody by The Bee Gees. Phenomenal band, The Bee Gees. Harry Braff on the Horizontal album - "Chequered flag for Harry Braff/It's so good to see you in the race". Who the hell is Harry Braff? (Laughs). SOS by Abba, wish I'd written that. I used to love Split Enz. Don't Dream It's Over by Crowded House would be a desert island disc for me, I'm still trying to rip it off to this day. Cartrouble by Adam and the Ants. Being Boiled by the Human League. Weller, English Rose. Kinks, Who. A few by U2. One is possibly the most beautiful song ever written. I cried my fucking eyes out, man. The feel, the emotion in his voice. It's heart-rending that song. I've got everything they've ever done.' (MOJO, January 1995)

Gold: Greatest Hits went on to be one of the best-selling albums of all time. Worldwide sales as of 2009 are 28 million, Gold: Greatest Hits has emerged as the group's all-time greatest success.[4] As of May 2013 it is the second best-selling album of all time in the UK, overtaking the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It has now sold more than 5,100,000 copies in that territory,[5] and ABBA joins Queen and The Beatles as one of only three artists to have sold over 5 million copies of one album in the UK.[6] The album entered the UK Albums Chart at number one in October 1992, and had climbed back to the number one position four times after then, the most recent time in 2008. It has occupied every position in the top 75 of the UK chart, while also appearing in the chart every year since its release except for 2002 and 2006. It now holds the title of the longest time spent in the album charts (933 weeks in the UK Top 100 as of 2 February 2014),[7] and is the first album in UK chart history to reach the 500 week mark. By the end of January 2014 the album had amassed 464 weeks in the UK top 75 and 932 weeks in total in the full album charts (a month shy of 18 years) ^^Just shows how popular they really are. Amazing that its been in the charts for so long. How anyone can dislike ABBA is beyond me, even though i've just realised i dont even own any of their music myself. Gonna have to invest in this Gold album in the near future.

For me anyone who doesn't like Abba I think hasn't got any soul.
I put them up there with the Beatles and The Beach Boys as the best act at coming up with wonderful hooks and making wonder singles and albums, thank god many are seen them as a top class album band too now. Not a bad album in their career. I even love their downbeat later career, Super Trooper and The Vistor are real great albums of downbeat pop and Arrival is one of the greatest pop albums ever made. Plus Abba Gold is hands down the best greatest hits set that you can get. For all the cheesy clothes and music videos, Bjorn and Benny are musical Gods.

I think you should invested in the box set, a ton of lost gems on their albums as well. Abba Gold i remember back in the late 90's was number 1 in Ireland for bloody months and went back to number 1 when Mamma Mia the movie came out. That's mind blowing really, even The Beatles aren't as loved as Abba are, that's a fact and that's coming from a massive Beatles fan. Put on a Beatle Song at a party and then a Abba song more people be up dancing to the damn Abba song .

I totally agree. Music fans - especially pretentious folk - get bogged down in discussion about 'experimentation' and 'art'.... everyone knows this type of people. But for many other music fans, myself included, the fundamentals of a song will always be melody, structure and performance over any experimentation and art. I do listen to what might be called experimental music, but it's just a side offering, and secondary, to a well structured pop song. And by the way, I believe that experimentation only works when you have talented conventional songwriters from the start. I'm a firm believer in experimentation being conventional songs being modified here and there to produce something out of this world (Brian Wilson, Beatles of course) - not Animal Collective meandering bollocks. ABBA is the perfect example of great melody, great songwriting and great performances. Sadly, great pop writing and great singers is something that doesn't seem to be in fashion these days. Either autotuned, manufactured crap has taken over, or the overrated indie hipsters have hijacked the music world with their pretentious mumbling. There's no great pop singer/songwriter out there today. When you take it from today's context, then ABBA have never been more relevant.
