A thread inspired by just having finished reading Wuthering Heights (the greatest novel of all time?) for the umpteenth time, I dedicate this thread to the greatest female solo artist of all time (in my opinion!).
In a world where the crimes of Rihanna, Beyonce, Shakira, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus have probably set women's rights back hundreds of years and 'lads' all around the country tragically think this is the peak standard of women in society, lets all remind ourselves of massively popular female solo artists that didn't rely on just cheap looks, but a natural beauty with sheer genius and god given vocal talents - Kate Bush epitomises all of this - a world away from all vacuous chart toppers today.
One of the greatest 'female' solo artists ever, that label doesn't do her justice, as she definitely rates alongside Bruce Springsteen as one of my favourite solo artists out of all of them. Never seen discussion on her on this site, so thoughts about her music?

Here's her duet with Peter Gabriel:

I love her, she's one of my most favourite female artists (my number 1 is/always will be Patti Smith). But I'll be honest to you, matt. Her voice scared me to death when I was younger, especially when I heard "Wuthering Heights" on a radio for very first time.
To me, Florence Welch is nothing, but a copy cat of Kate Bush.

I would have trust you mimmi to be a fan! I think Patti Smith is a brilliant singer too, I don't have all her stuff so I'm not as well versed in her works as Kate Bush, but no doubt she is a legend. As for Kate Bush, her voice, especially on Wuthering Heights, is unusual at first because it's so unique. No studio trickery there, and no machines to aid that voice back in the day.

She wrote 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes' when she was 13. Just an indication of her massive talent. She's up there with Sandy Denny for me as the best British female artists.

I adore Patti Smith. She's a godlike, not only as a singer/songwriter/musician, but everything. Very fnnny because both Patti and Kate Bush were 2 female musicians who scared me when I was a teenager (Patti as whole and Kate with her voice), but I became a big fan of them when I got older.

She's good and that, but for me there will never be a female singer that even comes close to Stevie Nicks.

She's good and that, but for me there will never be a female singer that even comes close to Stevie Nicks. The reason I prefer later Fleetwood Mac to the Peter Green era is because of Stevie Nicks (and Christine McVie). Don't have any of her solo albums - a few bits here and there - but definitely agree, amazing singer, could carry that band with her voice alone.

I would love to be there, but I don't think I can make it. Hopefully she'll play in the mainland of Europe too. I'm going to pick her debut album to listen tonight.

I wouldn't even be able to afford a ticket, but it will be great to see her in the public eye once again considering how reclusive she is.

My mom is a fan, so I grew up with her music. Amazing singer, amazing songs. She's also someone you just have to keep looking at.
Her voice never scared me, it used to make me laugh.
Fucking hate her Christmassong though.

Also, I have just Wuthering Heights myself, although for it me it was my maiden voyage. Like all great writers of the time, Bronte's writing style is glorious to behold, and although studies have broken up my reading of it, I enjoyed the book immensely. Was thinking of reading the works of the other sisters now I have the time. Any recommendations?

I had to read it years ago for English class in the 11th grade or my final year maybe? Can't remember. Anyway, I found it very difficult to read, that I do remember I also stopped halfway through. It's a beautiful, sad story though.

My parents are both big fans. I've only heard a few songs from her and to be honest I'm not the biggest fan of her music, although I really like Babushka. However, I have a lot of respect for her as an artist and as a songwriter.
I always get the impression that she's a bit of a nutter and I think that's great!

Was thinking of reading the works of the other sisters now I have the time. Any recommendations? Well I've only read Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre and Villette, and while I really did enjoy them, they don't come close to Wuthering Heights. The characterisation is probably just as strong and Villette is close in tone in terms of its gothic dark influence, but it lacks the bleak and stark imagery of Wuthering Heights, but that's probably from a biased perspective as I'm a lot more familiar with the Yorkshire moors of Wuthering Heights than the settings of the other two books . But as ever for me with books and films (and much music too actually), a second reading or viewing is essential for better judgement. Like Mean Mrs. Mustard, I read it at school first, but going back to read it the second time put it up there with some of my favourites.

Like Pulp, I think she's lucky that her best song also happens to be her best, but that's not to say there isn't plenty of gems still to be uncovered in her back catalogue. Take Hounds Of Love for instance, everything on that album is fantastic. ('Specially like the dog on the cover, copping a feel with it's floppy great earlobe, the jammy git!)
