Today Australia had a TV station raided for apparent payments to Schapelle Corby (drug smuggler) because they paid her to have an interview. If this were to be in the US or UK, would it be done the same way?

It depends on how politically incorrect it is ...that's why it's so hypocroytical
Take CASEY ANTHONY. If the networks had there way they would pay anything to have her tell her story and she was Aquitted but popular opinion is so against her they won't .if it was a political sensitive case I could see them doing this . For instance if David. Koresh lived thru Waco and CNN got a interview , his anti govt spewing so would draw a red flag .,, but if he was. John gotti they wouldn't care ...HYPOCRITES

In the US it is against the law to profit from a crime you have been convicted for. So if you write a book or make a movie the proceeds go to the families of the victims. Its called the Son of Sam Law. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_of_Sam_law
