While Definitely Maybe, as an album, was a defining moment for the decade of the nineties, the Stone Roses debut fueled a movement of music and set them up to be the "next big thing". Which album was more important? If the Roses hadn't lost it, and put out an album quicker than, and of more quality than, Second Coming, Oasis' emergence would have been hindered. On the other hand, it can be argued that DM redefined rock and roll, making it okay to embrace the lifestyle again during a time rife with PC pontification. I always like to compare the first and last songs of an album. Thus, Rock N Roll star and Married with Children vs. I Wanna Be Adored and I Am the Resurrection. Thoughts? Remarks?

Shouldn't include Fools Gold, the proper tracklisting close with IATR.
These two are my two fav records so it's really tough for me to choose between them. I usually go for DM, partly because it's more than just a record to me, it means so much more, but also I think when DM is at its best, it tops anything on TSR, apart from Resurrection. However, I do think TSR is a consistently better album, and it also has probably my fav song ever - Resurrection. So I usually go for DM, but as a whole I usually concede that the Roses is the better record.

Shouldn't include Fools Gold, the proper tracklisting close with IATR. Absolutely right...Resurrection is the proper last track. The US copy had Fools Gold on it. IATR is probably my second favorite all-time song behind Some Might Say. DM vs. TSR is truly a tough one. I was out the other night with friends and had this very same discussion. IWBA is a fabulous opening and "This Is the One" is such a great song. It's such a shame the Roses lost their nerve; Brown's solo stuff pales in comparison. On the other hand, DM wiped the slate clean of lingering "Seattle grunge" residue (long overdue, by the way). I'd probaly lean toward DM myself, but not by much.

have to say thats a difficult one to answer. when i got the stone roses abum a couple of years ago it blew me away and it still does, the quality of those songs is ubelieveable, i wanna be adored is one of the greatest songs ever, in my opinion anyway. however DM is well its just DM pure oasis. that album i think had the biggest impact, grabbed the music indusrty by the balls and shook it up, those songs still sound as fresh as they did bak in the 9os and there aint one bad song on there! like u say its just pity the stone roses 2nd album was below average apart from ten storey love song, tightrope, and your star will shine. i actually cant decide, i suppose it would have to be DM by an inch lol

a real toughie.
i would go with definitely maybe, by a pubic hair. ;D
both albums are awesome but dm speaks to me more, especially when i first heard it being a different age and stuff.
for me, rock 'n' roll star, live forever, cigarettes & alcohol, columbia and slide away just edge out i wanna be adored, made of stone, waterfall, i am the resurrection and this is the one.
also on the subjects of great debut albums, the libertines debut album up the bracker deserves to be in the 'one of the best debut albums of all time' group.

Up The Bracket isn't half as good as either of those two albums.
To answer the original question, it's got to be Definitely Maybe. The Stone Roses is an amazing album, but for a band with that much talent there's an awful lot of filler on it.
Elizabeth My Dear, Bye Bye Badman, Shoot You Down, Don't Stop (it's Waterfall backwards, for fucks sake) - as good as these songs are, they're the weaker tracks on the album and I don't think they stand up to the weaker songs on Definitely Maybe (for example Up In The Sky, Digsy's Dinner, Married With Children).
