Beady Eye covered "Gimme Shelter" on their recent tour, led me to pick some of the cover albums by my favourite bands/singers again. Here's my favourite ones. What about yours?
* Twelve - Patti Smith
Shame that I can't upload Patti's version of "Gimme Shelter" from this album on here as it's an official release, but I recommend everyone on here to listen to it. Powerful than powerful. Her cover of "Changing Of The Guards" is brilliant too. and she played "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on her very original way.
* Studio 150 - Weller
Named to the tiny studio in Amsterdam where this album has been recorded. "Black Is The Colour" brings me tears. Track 8 is "One Way Road" written by nobody, but Noel Gallagher.
* The Covers Record - Cat Power
"I Found A Reason" and "Sea Of Love" are breathtaking.

Not exactly a covers album but Blind Guardian did a killer Mike Oldfield cover on the Forgotten tales.

Thanks for the reply, Petrucci and kalas.
It's not an album either, but The Temptation's classic "My Girl" covered by Jesus and Mary Chain is fantastic too.

The only covers album I own is Wellers Studio 150 which I really like. There's a lot of love that's gone into it and you can hear it.

I'd like to see an Oasis cover album some day, they've certainly done enough of them...

Johnny Cash - American Recordings IV
His cover of Nine Inch Nails Hurt is immense and Sting's I Hung My Head deserves a mention too, great version.

Not too big a fan of covers in general but I agree Cash's output is fantastic. Of course, The Beatles did great covers on their first few albums - Twist and Shout most notably. Of all the covers I've heard that are so drastically different, this one of Embrace's cover of D12's How Come is amazing. I'm not a fan of rap and I despise most rap artists, but Embrace make the song sound amazing. Also, Patti Smith's Because The Night by Bruce Springsteen is amazing. Originally meant to be on Darkness on the Edge of Town, but Bruce gave it to Patti and she absolutely nails it. She would get every song spot on given her voice is so good.

I'd like to see an Oasis cover album some day, they've certainly done enough of them... Here we go, set your computer to "BURN CD". - I Am The Walrus (Beatles) - You've Got To Hide Your Love Away (Beatles) - Cum On Feel The Noize (Slade) - Heroes (David Bowie) - Street Fighting Man (Rolling Stones) - To Be Someone (Jam) - Carnation (Jam) - Helter Skelter (Beatles) - Hey Hey My My (Neil Young) - My Generation (The Who) - There Is A Light That Will Never Go Out (Smiths) - All You Need Is Love (Beatles) - The Butterfly Collector (Jam)All of these tunes were recorded while during Oasis' time period and officially released on CD or iTunes. Did I miss any? Do we count "Here Comes The Nice"?

A bit from "Octopus Garden" by The Beatles. and guitar riff from "Walk On Guilded Splinters" by Dr. John has been "covered" by Noel during an early soundcheck, but of course those two aren't complete.

Not an album but the White Stripes are my favourite covers band, for want of a much better term. As a big blues fan I love their versions of some seriously classic delta standards, and they've also done wonderful covers of some lesser known, more contemporary tracks; their take of 'St. Ides Of March' is one of my absolute favourite records. Delighted Jack White has continued the trend with his solo career.

The Flaming Lips did a complete covers album of Dark Side of The Moon. It was interesting to say the least. This coming Black Friday is record store day and the Lips are dropping a covers album of the Stone Roses debut LP. Can't wait to hear that project.

I always forget that one. That cover never sat right in the pocket for me.

I said I wasn't that keen on covers, mainly I though Oasis covers didn't really do the original justice (apart from Cum on Feel the Noize) but this cover Noel did of This Guy's In Love With You is sublime.
It helps he's got the full Burt Bacharach treatment behind him (Bacharach playing on the piano in this one) but I feel Noel's vocals are far superior to Herb Alpert in the original.
What makes it even more special, I think, is that it is outside the realm of traditional Oasis influence (British guitar music). I wish they would have diversified their sound a lot more, in regards to cover versions and musical influences on their own songs. I suppose Noel did take on a Bacharach influence on Going Nowhere, and the melody to Half the World Away, but that's about it.
