I never understood it.
Stone Roses have a few tracks like that, and it's not uncommon for bands to do it. Even BDI have done it.
What is the point? It sounds horrible, it's pointless, and is even worse than filler - so unnecessary.
Enlighten me, someone.

basically trying to be like the beatles or achieve some sense of experimentality, though like you said it rarely ever works well.
It can work, but usually its pretty gimmicky.

Yeah, it's pretty useless trick to me...apparently Beady Eye think it's still a revolutionary thing to do.
I liked backwards tracks when I was five because I thought it sounded funny but from then on it seems so pointless and out of date.

Beady Eye still think it is 1967. and much of what was released in 1967 pretty much shits all over the crap that passes off as 'music' nowadays.
