Im doing an assignment on oasis, and i was wondering if anyoune has any detailed information about what the songs are about. Im looking for stuff like complete song breakdowns, like what each line is talking about and how each song can be linked to thier own lives. Although any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, wazza

many of the songs have no meaning, music is like art, it's an art, so it's to be interpreted like you wish. In DM songs are about Living Forever, being famous and all the rock star life (Rock'n'roll Star), love songs like Married with children and Slide Away, Cigarettes and Alcohol, it's all in the title. Music is to be interpreted cos it's just like any other art. so I would like to help you but Oasis really have a lot of songs and usually the message of each song is just out there. they have no hidden meaning or stuff. if you have any specific doubt ask again and I'll try to help

That being said, Oasis songs, by and large, are total rubbish lyrically. Noel, Gem, Liam, and Andy hit on something occasionally, but are generally pretty crappy lyricists. Most songs are meaningless.
Examples: Noel: "She's got dirty dishes on the brain." Liam: "Live for your toys, even though they make noise." Andy: "They got so blind that they cannot see." Gem: "Till they're bright as sun."

get a hold of the liner notes for The Masterplan - there are explanations/background for those particular songs.
many of the songs of course can be broken down to: having fun & love
I think you will find that for a band with such a large, "hard" (I know that's a relative term) sound and lad image - their songs are some of the most positive you will find around.. look at some of the titles:
It's Good To Be Free Let There Be Love She Is Love Stay Young Alive It's Gettin' Better Man I Hope I Think I Know Keep The Dream Alive Better Man Live Forever Who Feels Love Turn Up The Sun
hope this helps

Don't Go Away was written about when noel and liam thought their mum had cancer.
Up In The Sky was written about the Conservative Political Party who it appeared knew nothing about what was going on in the working classes.
Digsy's Dinner was about the bands scouse cafe owner 'Digsy' - who himself made up a brief jingle about his own dinner...lasagne.
Part Of The Queue is about congestion in London and how its become over-crowded mixed with Noel's impatience.

Probably shouldn't include that tune in the 'fun' category.

yea, like mogly said, art is subjective, its different to different people; but I don't believe the guys just write rubbish for the sake or writing, because anyone who knows anything about art knows the center of all art is concept; art is a medium for conveying concept; now, what the true concept is can be very different things to different people, but i think an analysis of songs/albums can come up with some interesting things; like for example, 'Let there be love', I view it as something very political. Like Lennon's 'Imagine' (it isnt a mistake or coincidence they sound the exact same), it presents a utopian argument against a negative social backdrop (where a hole has been kicked in the sky, the heavens are crying, the world is coming undone....the answer to problems is love, brotherhood etc...); i tend to overanalyse shit so I'm going to stop my incestuous babbling here, but thats what I picked up once I heard the song; but yeah, easy to pick apart the songs piece by piece; i always found that trio of 'talk tonight', 'half the world away' and 'its good to be free' to be interesting ones to look at, especially talk tonight, because they're apparently very biographical of that moment in time

Songs on SOTSOG are all about them getting clean I know that Gas Panic is about panic attacks Liam had at night and Roll it Over is Liam wanting to kill himself.

Here's an interview with Noel where he talks about all the songs off of Be Here Now. It isn't a line by line explanation, but it certainly explains the origins of some of the songs, which might be helpful. www.the-oasis.de/interviews/noelaboutbhn.htm

Talk Tonight is about when Noel 'disappeared' on one of the States tour and a fan helped him through. There's nothing crappy about the lyrics in this song, for instance: '...and you make sure I eat today/You take me walking/to where you played/when you were young...'. The words are quite simple but paint the picture beautifully.
No one's mentioned 'Live Forever' - have they? - or have I missed it? Most folk know it was for his mum.

I was going to mention Talk Tonight but innhe beat me to it. I think there is an explanation of it in the interview track on the Acquiesce promo cd that came out around the same time as The Masterplan. I think Noel talks about Talk Tonight and how it's about when he met a girl in San Francisco while touring and he was depressed. She was drinking Snapple Strawberry Lemonade at the time and took him to a park. Which explains a few of the lines in the song.

I remember reading some where that Don't Look Back In Anger was about the pressures of touring. Of course, some of the songs like TIOBI, Songbird, Acquiesce, are pretty easy to figure out. Also remember reading that Some Might Say was about something that happened to Noel when he temporarily quit the band and went to Las Vegas. Something about a honeymoon couple telling him he should go back to the band and such. I think that one was on Wikipedia. Most of the lyrics are non-sensical though. One of the reasons I love them.
