Thanks matt.
I do have a couple of books about Moz, but I'm quite excited about it. Can't wait to read it.

Can someone recommend a good book about the Smiths?
I've always wanted to learn more about them and how things ended up so sourly as the years went on. I love this band so much but I feel I should know more about their history.

"The Smiths - Songs That Saved Your Life" by Simon Goddard is a great book to start with, mkoasis. There's a log of information how their songs were written (about every single and every album), how Moz and Johnny met etc etc. I bought it in London years ago and it wasn't expensive at all.
I also bought one like "The Smiths Tour" or something like that once in Manchester, but I recommmend you the one by Simon Goddard. Great one.

I love this band so much but I feel I should know more about their history. Morrissey and Marr: The Severed Alliance is also a great book. Gives a great overview of Morrissey and Marr's life prior to the band, and then really gets stuck in with great detail about the band process. Quite a hefty book but I rattled it off in a couple of days, such was my fascination and mainly because it is very readable. www.amazon.co.uk/Morrissey-Marr-Alliance-Twentieth-Anniversary/dp/1780383045

Thanks, both of you. I'm currently reading Neil Young's autobiography so those will be next.

I went with Marr when they split. I go with him wherever he goes - The Healers, Modest Mouse, The Cribs, solo. Johnny is my forever guitar hero, but The Smiths are the band for my life. I just can't divide them into 2 pieces (but Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce had to be there too to complete The Smiths), same as I can't divide brothers Gallagher.

How do you rate Electronic? (Marr and Bernard Sumner's collaboration, that is)

How do you rate Electronic? (Marr and Bernard Sumner's collaboration, that is) Completely different than what Johnny has done with The Smiths. "Forbidden City" is a great tune. Johnny's work with Lisa Germano and Neil Finn is fantastic too. He played a guitar for Lisa's album years ago and Lisa Germano is a very talented, brilliant singer and a songwriter.

The book is being published - and I'm not joking - as a Penguins Classic!
Do I think this is deserved? Definitely, and only Morrissey could get away with this. He knows that a lot of folk will completely understand why it is published as a classic - and the notion that the critics say that a star usually has to be dead before achieving an iconic status like Morrissey is something I agree with. But it will also really annoy his detractors - and he loves a good wind up, so the cheekiness of it all is endearing. In reality though, I think this is part of Morrissey's sense of humour - he is taking the piss. If you know anything about him, then you know he has a great, and unique, sense of humour (as his lyrics constantly remind us). This is another example of that.
What we can be sure of is this is one celebrity autobiography that will be worth reading - 99% are complete and utter rubbish that are not fit for toilet paper, but this will be brilliant.

Went on Amazon to pre-order yesterday morning and had to have a chuckle to myself when it appeared as a Penguin Classic. Only Morrissey.

Dylans autobiography is the best music related book I have read but Morrisey could well top it.

Dylans autobiography is the best music related book I have read but Morrisey could well top it. Spot on. Neil McCormick in the The Telegraph gave it 5 stars and claimed it is the best since Dylan's Chronicles. Not a surprise given they are the two greatest lyricists of all time in my opinion. He touches upon well worn issues such as his sexuality (which is really nothing new) and his opinion of the judge in The Smiths trial, but thankfully, he's generous towards his old band members - the last thing I wanted was him being utterly scathing towards them all, especially Johnny Marr. But he blames his break up with Marr due to exhaustion and miscommunication. Can't wait to get it, I will devour this book in minutes when it arrives through my door!

I absolutely need to buy this. How come it only costs 10 € on amazon? To all the germans on here who buy it: Amazon tells me the book will arrive in 1-3 months? Where else can I buy it? I certainly won't wait for 3 months! Do you think the book will be available in a local bookshop? I have my doubts, Morrissey is not that popular in Germany...
