I've been hoping for new material from Lee Mavers for years now. What on earth has this bloke been doing? Mavers' work, ones of the best. The La's only album is a masterpiece. Has anyone heard anything about Mavers' or The La's (which is very unlikely, I know ) ?

lots of bootlegs out there, he's done a few gigs in recent years, didn't he also get a co-write credit on one of Weller's big 90s songs, maybe 'Changinman'?
Thing is, 'There She Goes' alone probably continues to net him enough income each year for him not to really have to do anything. 'Lifestyle' choices come in many flavours too...

I was supposed to see The La's last March in New York City at Webster Hall but they canceled literally the day before the show. What a fucking letdown.

Saw them play a few years back and it was a shambles.

I saw them play years ago on the same bill as "The Stands" Have to say the stands pissed all over them from a high height!

Last thing I heard was actually four years ago, news broke that The La's were to record a second album - albeit with a completely different line up, consisting of guys from The Libertines or something (god knows why...).
Considering we haven't heard a sausage in over 20 years, I doubt that is going to change. Will probably never get to hear new stuff by Mavers - an absolute shame because from what people in the know have said, he has some great great songs that would put to shame many of the ones on The La's tucked away somewhere.

Strange character is Lee Mavers. A total fuckin' waste if ye ask me. Who knows though, maybe he fluked it with those songs and just doesn't have it in him to write anythin' else decent. He must have some songs stocked up if he's kept writin' over the years though!

I've seen him with a bass player as "The La's Stripped Back" 2 years ago. Mavers looked and sounded terrible, but I was happy to listen to his masterpiece live.

I remember reading an article that was looking into the possibility of album #2 where the writer had been played some demos of unreleased material that would make up another album which he described as being something like "every bit as good as the first album, maybe even better"
I don't know how true that may be, but I guess we'll never know whether Mavers genuinely has no faith in any new stuff after the success of their debut, or whether he's just lazy.

Lee Mavers reminds me of that Seinfeld episode "The Race" when Jerry refuses to run again because it would jeopardize his "legendary" status. "I choose, not to record!" - Lee Mavers

I think it"s three years since we heard anything at all from this guy now. There is actually a new La's album out this month, though unfortunately it's just yet another cynical record company cash in compilation of songs that are over 25 years old.
I'm sure we will get a second La's album eventually, Lee must have recorded the songs at some point over the years (I'd imagine he's done plenty of songs, not just the songs from the Kitchen and Crescent tapes), one day he just has to give them a proper release. This guy has so many great songs like 'Was It Something I Said?' and 'Raindance', it would be such a waste to never release them to the world.

Both Noel and Liam have said he's a lazy cun t and there was a quote from that he'd only release a second album when he was happy with the first one.

He just needs to move on from it, accept that it doesn't sound as good as it should (to him anyway) and move on.

I read a book about The La's, think it's called In Search Of The La's, mainly about him with a good bit of interaction between him & the author in the book. I've always though Mavers ain't right in the head, this book confirmed it, mans nuts. I also think he fluked that album.

Such a shame. He got a great talent, but seems like he has no idea what to do with it. Still The La's only one selftitled album is classic.

Serious question.......how does Lee Mavers make money these days? Surely he can't be living off the sales and potential royalties of The La's only record? It couldn't have been that big of a seller. Does he do private music lessons? Live in his parents basement? Crash on friends couches? Or is he like a British version of Daniel Johnston?

There have been a good few reissues of that album and other 'anthology' style records of which he is the sole songwriter. He's make some money out of that but I think the record company will be the real winner. I think he still plays like shows so he'll make a bit out of that. He won't be wealthy by any stretch.

Although this would further improve the legacy of the first album. Would there be enough demand for a documentary? I don't think their fan base is that big at all.

Ok, BIG ideas time........................ A Liam solo album is coming (eventually). Lee doesn't want to be in the public eye anymore. How about Lee Mavers helps to co-write Liam's debut? Lee writes, Liam sings and tours. All parties win. Liam. Lee. Us.
