I'm gonna let mimmihopps reply to you, dean I think JM is right. I hate people who are constantly with their cameras, cellphones and fucking flashes at gigs. It's fucking distracting. And for what? To have more FB likes or youtube hits?? Fuck them. Just enjoy the show FFS. Take one or two pics/vids for memento and that's it. I read an article on stereogum a couple of weeks ago where they were criticizing artists for asking people not to use phones during their gigs. I don't mind them asking that during interviews or before the gig. However, I was watching The Lumineers on Saturday at Newport Folk Festival and they stopped in the middle of their hit song to ask people to stop recording, and I gotta admit the singer sounded like a complete douche. Are you afraid you're gonna miss a few Ho or Hey? Idiot.

Johnny Marr is a crap solo performer! I've seen him twice and he is fucking great. One of the most humble and talented musicians on the planet.

I completely agree. Why spend money to watch a band and end up watching through a 2 inch screen whilst recording is beyond me. The videos are never watchable anyway.

I don't record because I don't wanna watch a gig through a camera screen. I'll sometimes take a few pictures of bands I really love but rarely. I prefer to be in the moment.
I'd still be a massive hypocrite if I complained about other doing it though.
I watch enough YouTube clips of gigs that I actually appreciate some of those people. When Noel brought out Angel Child I was very happy there were people that did record it. Same with when Noel started playing LTLSALOM or the first gig where Noel debuted Freaky Teeth. And when Beady Eye brought WOMR and IABWAB into the set list or debuted WNSIS.
Frankly no YouTube videos will never replace a proshot DVD so I don't know what artists are complaining about. People pay a lot of money to see some of these people and they should be able to enjoy it however they want. If they want to record and share their experience...what is the harm?
I find it hard to believe a good number of this board don't occasionally appreciate the bootleggers.

They risk a lot trying to record a show and then share it with fellow fans. But this is not the discussion here. We're not talking about a small device hid in your front pocket, we're talking about those who keep their cameras up and flash their stupid flashes. Not only they're not enjoying the show, but they are also annoying those around them who want to enjoy the show without distractions. I personally don't watch many audience youtube clips. But I do agree with you that if it wasn't for some tapers you would never hear some weird tracks that are only played live a handful of times.

There is definitely a difference between a proper bootlegger and and audience recording. I'd rather them videoing than pictures if only for the flash thing which I agree annoys me at times. Especially since you don't need a flash at a concert. I'm not a photography expert...but I am pretty sure the itty bitty flash on your recreational camera won't be illuminating anything on the stage that you are try to take a picture of 30 meters away. Personally I don't know how some people do it. My arms get tired when I am braiding my hair or something sometimes...and that's like 10 minutes. How they manage to keep their cameras above their heads for the better part of 90 minutes is beyond me.

So maybe Johnny Marr should talk to his PR Team...
I like to take pictures and/or record some videos during gigs, but only when I am in front row so I can put the camera on my chest (without flash of course!) in order to "hide" the light from the screen and avoid to disturb others people.
I hate people who stupidly wave it above their head.

It's something I've noticed younger gig goers doing a lot more rather than older fans at shows.

They do that at every show (notice how perfectly rehearsed the return to the song is), it's less an admonition and more a way to get people into the performance, which is why they wrote the interactive "Ho, Hey" to begin with: To get people to pay attention to their music when they were playing to indifferent audiences. I don't usually whip out the phone during gigs, because I want to experience it first-hand, but I do make sure to get my wife's favorite tune at each show we go to so she can have the memento. She knows when Oasis reform she'll be doing the same for me I get where JM is coming from, but some great bootlegs have come out of well-placed fans with quality phones: I'm fine with fans using their phones, as long as they're not entitled assholes blinding AND blocking everyone behind them with a fucking tablet:

Johnny is the (great) guitar man, not singer after all. If people think he's a crap solo performer, it's ok. I can live with that. He's my forever guitar hero.

So I'm listening to a wonderful audio recording of a live show and it's completely ruined by the shutter noise of the guy next to the taper! If you must take a zillion pictures, turn that fucking annoying sound off!!!

Anyone who brings a tablet/ipad to a gig is a shambles of a person. Don't get it at all.

The guy is a legend and it's a tragedy he died so young, My first gig was seeing Rory play an outdoor gig when I was 5 years old. My Mam made my older brothers take me!!

People take so many pictures and videos now that they forget to live in the moment. I'd rather have my memories than a stack full of crap iphone photos.
