Love The Smiths. Perhaps my second favorite band right after Oasis. Johnny Mar's jangling guitar, Moz's delivery, and the witty and, at times, sarcastic lyrics immersed in fantastic social commentary setting.
Brilliant band.
It's a travesty they still haven't been invited into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. But nevermind.
So, what's your favorite album of theirs? Tough one, innit.

You've forgotten "Hatful Of Hollow" and it's "Marr", not "Mar".
I just can't pick one, but if I "have to", I will pick Hatful Of Hollow and The Queen Is Dead.

I love The Queen is Dead and Strangeways, Here We Come equally. Can't choose one over the other.
Also I know Louder Than Bombs is technically a compilation, but that's another I really enjoy listening to.

Meat is Murder if 'How soon is now' is included, otherwise The Queen is Dead just edges it out for me.

It's a compilation but 'Louder Than Bombs' for me. It's just perfect.

Incomparable with anyone and anything, simply the greatest band to have ever graced planet earth.
If push came to shove for the studio albums, it would probably be The Queen Is Dead. But there's nothing in it for me. For the choices not on that list, Louder Than Bombs or Hatful of Hollow (especially with that version of Back To The Old House).

I just discovered Johnny Marr this year, with the Messenger, and I simply love it. Now I want to discover his past, and thus The Smiths (even if I find Morissey's voice quite odd). I only know "There is a light that never goes out" sung by Noel Gallagher at TCT.
Can you suggest me an album to discover them ? A best of ? An accoustic session ?
Thanks!

The compilation "The Sound of The Smiths" it's a pretty good start for introducing you to the band.

I didn't include Hollow or Bombs because they aren't albums.....
Although, I do like Hallow, too - love the song, This Night Has Opened My Eyes, from that compilation.

If you love The Smiths, you just can't forget "Hatful Of Hollow"! Many songs from BBC Radio Sessions are even better than the studio version.
nadia, I would recommend you to get "The Queen Is Dead" and "Hatful Of Hollow" first. "Hatful Of Hollow" is a compilation album with 2 Radio Sessions they've done - John Peel Session and David Jensen Session on BBC Radio 1. There's no acoustic session by them, but listen to "Back To The Old House" from "Hatful Of Hollow". You'll know why I recommend this song and this album once you've heard it.
I love The Smiths more than I can tell.

Tough choice - I love the Smiths just as much as Oasis and their catalogue is so ridiculously tighly packed with quality songs. I love The Queen Is Dead, Strangeways, the debut and Hatful of Hollow almost equally. The Queen Is Dead is pretty hard to beat overall, but I like the earlier sound a little bit more. Also, if you want to discover the band, just get the Smiths Complete set right away Good bargain for 8 albums. So did I at first. But after a while I realized how brilliant he really is - not just the voice.

The first time I listened to The Smiths, I was ignoring his voice because I didn't like his voice, but loved the music. Now I like everything about The Smiths, including his voice. It tends to be an acquired taste. Just keep listening, you'll get it eventually.

The first tune I ever remember which was Smiths related was Morrissey's debut single from You Are The Quarry, Irish Blood English Heart. I was 13 and I loved it. I knew that Moz had previous with a band called The Smiths but it wasn't until I was 17 that I looked into it more, especially considering the fact that what made everyone said made them special wasn't just Morrissey, but their guitarist Johnny Marr. Of course, I'd heard This Charming Man, and I loved it. But it wasn't until I listened to The Sound of the Smiths that I knew I had found something magical, and importantly, something for me and for me only.
I still haven't met anyone else who is a fanatic of The Smiths. I know loads who like The Smiths, but don't love them. And to be brutally honest, I'm not sure if I want to meet anyone who loves them as much as me! It is the only time I'll ever be selfish, because I want The Smiths just for myself!

to be brutally honest, I'm not sure if I want to meet anyone who loves them as much as me! We can have our endless The Smiths talk if we ever meet, matt. I remember the first Smiths record I listened to was "Meat Is Murder". I was in a rental record shop and saw the album then I thought "What a title...". I picked the record and as soon as the intro of "The Headmaster Ritual" came, I was "sold" to them.

To be more specific, I wouldn't like The Smiths to be so so huge like Beatles proportion. I love a lot of massive bands, but I agree with you on the matter in regards to The Smiths - I wouldn't want them to be so big that everyone loves them.

kalas, the "first love" (the first record you bought)is/always be special. and matt, "I wouldn't want them to be so big that everyone loves them". To me, "them" are The Smiths and The Twilight Sad.

kalas, the "first love" (the first record you bought)is/always be special. . Yep that's why to this day I never change the dial when I hear "Cecilia " by Simon & Garfunkel. "Gotta get you into my life Beatles "and don't laugh don't know who sung , didnt even know it was a anti war Vietnam protest song , but " billy don't be a hero " it was on every station didn't know why he was talking about getting killed in war , I was 9 only paid attention to baseball but those 3 45 s are the ones I bought first , always have a soft spot for them , especially" billy don't be a hero" , weird .

I really do think This Night Has Opened My Eyes is one of the best Smith songs, if not THE best....it has everything good about them rolled into one song.
That guitar, that bass, those drums, those lyrics, the delivery....incredible.

Also, I never understood the, apparently universal, hate for their cover of Golden Lights. I always liked it.
