What's the story behind Brian Cannon & Michael Spencer Jones etc who did the artwork for the first 3 records? What happened to them?
Did they get ditched/sacked or was it just part of Noel's wanting to 'reinvent' the band around the time of SOTSOG that meant a change of style for the artwork? He has said that the cover of BHN is 'shit' (which it is), but I really hate the artwork since then (SOTSOG & HC). The cover of Songbird & WFL & The Hindu Times are awful! And the cover of HC says nothing.
Noel shouldn't be allowed to offer creative advice on the sleeve when he's shit at it - he should leave it to the experts.
And isn't it funny that the best albums have the best artwork?
And changing the logo was a fucking big mistake IMO. Thank god they changed it back (sort of).
What do other people think?

I don't know what happened to those guys, but I agree that the artwork for SOTSOG and HC are awful. I don't mind the singles covers except for Songbird, it's horrible.
It's back to good with the DBTT era artwork though!

I have to agree the quality of the artwork since Be Here Now has be pretty bad, although a few exceptions like little by little and the importance of being idle

I agree with SOTSOG artwork, too messy or something. HC is ok I think, but it could have been better. DBTT and Morning glory has best artworks, great pictures and style on both, not too much anything or too less.

i actually got to talk to the man himself once when I was afforded the chance to buy some Be Here Now album art proofs from him. i also bought a oasis magazine that was made as a beta, it was a London fan club thing and was pretty awesome. he just said that after 1998 Noel wanted to change the visual look and feel of things, shake it up as had happened to the bands lineup.

You know IMO I for the most part, course with some MINOR exceptions, most of the covers after BHN are crap. NOt that good. I say they bring back those to dudes and sort it all out by the next lp in 2008

I'll second that. Brian Cannon has such a great sense of style, which in turn gave Oasis their own graphic style. I love his literal interpretations of the lyrics, and when he talks about the artistic movements he's referring to in his design of the DM cover. The sleeve for 'Whatever' is absolutely gorgeous.
I remember getting SOTSOG & flipping through the booklet and thinking "Oh God, whoever designed this artwork should be shot"; then I read that it was Noel. Whoops.
I think Cannon's work for the Verve is even better. It's a bit more subtle that his Oasis stuff.
The cover for DBTT only scrapes through because it's not excessively awful - but it's pretty ordinary.

I agree that the artwork since SOTSOG has been pretty naff or pretty ordinary, with a few notable exceptions. I'd love to see Brian Cannon and Michael Spencer Jones come back to do the sleeves, thry were doing good work even when the band was going downhill (the cover to the AATW single = top stuff. Stand By Me is the oly pretty shit one he did). But then, I'd like to see Owen Morris come back and produce the records as well!

dbtt is just okay. i mean it doesnt stand out at all. i dont get sotsog, i think its the worst - nice pic of new york, but doesnt reflect oasis or the album at all.

As far as I can gather, Microdot (Brian Cannon's graphic design company) folded a while back. "Apparently" he's gone back to his old life in obscurity. Do you want me to try and find him and persuade him to make a comeback? richardgoodallgallery.com/msj2.html (Spencer Jones Photography) I like the Liam in the picture frame one.
