We're all Oasis fans on here so it stands to reason that many of us will also be fans of similar bands (Kasabian, Weller, OCS, the Verve, Stone Roses, Beatles, Stones etc) but one thing that's become apparent from the Beady Eye forums is that the same arguments keep popping up over lack of choruses, substandard LAG songwriting etc. I don't want to bring those petty Noel v Liam fights to this board but I am interested in what other music people here listen to as there seems to be very little variety in what people classify as good and bad. BE sounds quality to me but I think I'm quite eclectic (I've got nearly 900 CDs and over 20,000 mp3s on my itunes) but what good is debate without knowing what everyone else likes. So shoot a gun and surprise me...
I'll go first - follow my format by all means but no repetitions. Feel free to list as many or as few bands as you want.
Top 10 bands of all time: 1. Oasis 2. The Smiths 3. The Beatles 4. The Libertines 5. Blur 6. Radiohead 7. Arcade Fire 8. Queens of the Stone Age 9. Belly 10. Idlewild
Top 10 from the last 10 years: 1. Arctic Monkeys 2. The National 3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs 4. The Joy Formidable 5. Frightened Rabbit 6. Laura Marling 7. The Shins 8. Biffy Clyro (even though the last album's shite) 9. TV on the Radio 10. Elbow
Top 5 new bands (2 or fewer albums) 1. Sky Larkin 2. Everything Everything 3. Tame Impala 4. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart 5. Savages

We have lots of members with great tastes in music on this forum and it's one of the reasons we can proud of this place.
I can say that I'm a music lover. I love good music and love to going to gigs. My life time bands are The Smiths, The Jam and Oasis.
The bands I really love next to the 3 I just mentioned above are:
Weller The National The Twilight Sad Broken Records Ed Harcourt (singer songwriter/multi composer) Frightened Rabbit Sigur Ros The Magnetic North Patti Smith (I adore her) Cat Power Kate Bush Echo and The Bunnymen
I also love:
The Stone Roses Laura Marling Beirut Lisa Germano Sparrow and The Workshop The Coral The Cribs The Verve

I am glad. Rightly or wrongly I sometimes get the impression that some people have never heard anything that's not derivative of either the Beatles or the Jam and then solely base their opinions on how other stuff stacks up to those bands. Like when I hear people say that Miles Kane and Jake Bugg are the "saviours" of music, I can't help but want people to expand their horizons. Nice call on Sigur Ros, Cat Power, Twilight Sad and Beirut by the way - quality

Recomending for those who haven't heard them Titus Andronicus Spiritualized Mogwai Sigur Ros Yes, yes, yes and yes. The minute people start moaning about lack of choruses I always think of bands like Mogwai and Spiritualized and wonder what they'd make of them. If Don't Brother Me is too long for them, I'd love to be in a room with them and play Cop Shoot Cop.

Each to their own and all that, but i find your top ten bands of all time quite laughable to be honest.
But i'm one of these people who need to expand their horizons so you should probably just ignore me.

They're my top bands of all time because I've connected more with them over a longer period - that's why I put the last ten years and new bands in because it gives a different perspective of what I'm into. Out of the all time top 10, I've probably only listened to QOTSA and Radiohead in the last few months.

Savages Sort of like yourself, not so much into the bands that followed and were inspired by Oasis, despite them being my joint favourite band with The Smiths and U2. I find the whole 'lad rock' image very tiresome. Bands like The Verve are absolutely great, but I can't say the same for any of these Britpop influenced acts from the last ten years or so like Miles Kane, Jake Bugg and Kasabian - only Arctic Monkeys have deservedly made a name for themselves for me personally. It's all predictable, NME hyped rubbish most of the time sadly - all the more sad when the NME was actually respectable way way back in the day. Acts I'm really into at the moment include Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Morning Jacket, MGMT, Ryan Adams, David Bowie, Sigur Ros (gearing up for their next album). Delighted you like Idlewild, one of my favourite acts ever - bits of post-punk, Pavement and REM mixed with Scottish and Celtic melancholy (the latter particularly of their last couple of albums). The lead singer Roddy Woomble has a brilliant solo career too - his debut solo effort My Secret is My Silence is very rooted in Scottish folk music, and for me, is a hidden gem of an album. I don't know what it is, but being Scottish I get an instant feel for Scottish bands like these that mimmihopps mentions such as Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad, The Magnetic North (whose album Orkney: Symphony of the Magnetic North is about my homeplace!) and many more. I think there's a lot of melancholy within this music which is attractive to me as a person, but also which runs in tandem with the Scottish culture I think. I honestly think melancholy is that essential ingredient to great music. But what is best about the diverse taste on this site is that many other bands that aren't given much coverage by rag journals like the NME do get a lot of attention here. It's incredibly refreshing and done more to open my eyes (or ears) to great music than any journal could ever possibly do.

Here's the bands/artists I like. Too lazy to rank them in any order, and if I was going to do "best bands" or whatever this would be leaving out a lot, but here ya go.
Classics -The Beatles -The Who -Led Zeppelin -Bob Dylan -Rolling Stones -Hendrix -Pink Floyd -Velvet Underground -The Kinks -Cream -Simon & Garfunkel -Fleetwood Mac
Newer than above bands but not recent -Oasis (well...obviously) -Nirvana -Pearl Jam -Ride -The Verve -Jesus & Mary Chain -Pixies -Stone Roses -My Bloody Valentine -Slowdive -Flaming Lips -Pavement -Radiohead
A little bit more recent -Black Rebel Motorcycle Club -The Strokes -Arcade Fire -The White Stripes -The Black Keys -Arctic Monkeys -Wilco -MGMT -TV On the Radio -Broken Social Scene -The Black Angels -Tame Impala
bolded ones have released albums this year if they're maybe bands anyone likes but doesn't keep up with

Scotland has been very special since my teenage years. I left a part of my youth in Scotland behind. I haven't been back there for years, but when I listen to all my favourite Scottish bands, it always gives me a warm and "home-coming" feeling. Music papers can give you a suggestion about (new) bands/music, but in the end you gotta trust your ears.
