And kalas, I was just wondering if you've read The Hunt For Red October? That one is a real page turner for me.

Such a great book Classic case of movie totally letting me down ...I love Connery but his lame attempt at a Russian accent was almost comical , not what I envisioned as ramius The book I couldn't put down , the movie blew ...... That and patriot games are his best to me. ( I know he passed away but Robert shaw quint from jaws would have made a great captain. Of the sub )

is it any good, i recently read Lost in the Funhouse: The Life and Mind of Andy Kaufman - Bill Zehme it's one of the better biographies i've read and it's written by Andy Kaufman's best friend......you'd probably enjoy it and have the sense of humor to get it if you liked the one you've mentioned. God bless.

I'm taking a break from the plight of the victorian woman for a minute, and then I'm going back to Madame Bovary. Right now I'm reading "The Given Day" by Dennis Lehane...which I have to say is quite different from Mystic River/Gone Baby Gone/Shutter Island which are more murder/mystery stories, it's not necessarily as "exciting" but the story is captivating. Takes place during WWI and tells side-by-side stories of 1 black family in oil country and 1 white family in Boston. It's a country at a cross-roads, black/white, democracy/anarchy, union/non-union, temperance/heroin...I'm only a quarter of the way through, and it's a substantial book, but I have to say it's turning out to be a great story. I have 100 Years of Solitude in my queue right now, and I'd like to read another Murakami novel, maybe Norwegian Wood is next?

There's a Canadian-owned second-hand shop around there called the Abbey which just has books literally packed in floor to ceiling, but I found a great hardback 1960 copy of Les Miserables (original French).

Paris was a hard city to live in at first, but after three months, I was sad to come home. I dream of it all the time! But I do prefer, as for living, being in Bordeaux or Caen. But I also love Canada...I'm planning a trip up when I get back to Detroit. I'm going to drive to Toronto first to visit my friends (it's only 4 hours from Detroit) and then I'm going to drive east to Montreal, Quebec and Ottawa. I'm already planning our 30 day post-deployment vacation...Western Europe on the seaside...thinking Lisbon, Barcelona, Mallorca, Marrakech (I have to step foot in Africa), Montecarlo, and then 10 days in Italy...not sure where yet SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!!

It has its fair moments of dark material as is expected of Hardy novels but it's quite uplifiting in places.

I'm half way through Dennis Lehane's "The Given Day"...it's completely different than his other stories. I'm already deeply invested in these characters.

Just finished the actor Tom Sizemore's autobiography. One of my favourite actors in the late 90's. He's great in Natural Born Killers and Saving Private Ryan, and gives De Niro a run for his money in Heat. Shame he blew his career on coke, heroin, crack and crystal meth addiction.

It's just been announced that Iain Banks has died at the shockingly young age of 59, Gem mentioned in 2000 interview that his book the dark, unsettling 'The Wasp Factory' was his favourite book.

Book three (1980) of David Peace's 'Red Riding' Quartet.
They are uncomfortable to read but Yorkshire Noir is something that actually works!
