"To the people lost and lonely..."
is the same as
"So I look in your direction..."
Thanks. Great thread and great observation by me.

I like it too. Took me a while though as Chris Martin's vox on this always used to annoy me when the album first came out.

Parachutes is one of the best albums ever. Definitely, and I'd say A Rush of Blood to the Head is even better for me!

hm I like Shiver, it's a great nod to Jeff Buckley, but it's one of the last songs Come On Outside would make me think of. not in a bad way it's just not a connection I would have made. good observation tho.

I never liked Coldplay, there's no connection whatsoever to both songs, but at least back then they didn't dress or look like douchebags

I genuinely cannot believe that anyone believes that Parachutes is one of the greatest albums of all time. It's a good album, granted, but how few albums must a person have listened to in order to think it's up there with the best? I can understand A Rush of Blood to the Head to an extent, but Parachutes? Seriously?
What single song on Parachutes is anywhere near equal to Live Forever, A Day in the Life, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, She Bangs The Drums, Fake Plastic Trees etc etc etc. Jesus.

It's possible some people don't think that the songs you listed are all that great either. For instance, I think Fake Plastic Trees, while there's no doubt it's a good song, is an absolute shock to have in a greatest songs ever.
That being said, I don't think Parachutes is amazing either. A nice listen, but not in my top albums list.
But I definitely see the comparison here. Wouldn't have picked up on it before, but now I have a bit of an issue listening to Come On Outside without hearing Shivers.

Shiver is a load of shite, Parachutes isn't all it's cracked up to be either. Decent, but not amazing

Coldplay is overrated but it's simply because when they appeared, uk music was shit. So they took the less shitty of the bunch and made it the symbol of a generation. But it was just a shit band. Now They sell shitloads of records because they are sell outs. Back then they were just an average indie band.

I didn't enjoy their last album at all, but I'm sure they'll try and get back to something a bit more interesting for their next album. Other than that, in terms of the major UK acts, they're still head and shoulders above the terrible indie guitar crap that comes out - focuses on image with no tunes at all. I think Arctic Monkeys are defintely there with Coldplay, but they don't seem like the big act they were (but still as awesome as ever). Kasabian are a long way behind those two - the odd killer tunes but often meandering and seems to emphasise image over anything else (though their last album pisses over Coldplays I think). The Vaccines? Don't make me laugh. Nothing fashonable about the guys in Coldplay - very ordinary nice guys, lead singer is teetotal - doesn't sound interesting or rock n roll at all. But when all is said and done, what other acts could write a song as great as The Scientist, Amsterdam, Politik, Don't Panic, Spies etc. In my opinion, Coldplay could have released every piece of shit imaginable and they'd still be worthy for writing The Scientist. A brilliant band that don't get the credit they deserve.

I love everything Coldplay has done, even Mylo Xyloto. For me they're one of the best bands around. Even if you don't like them as people or don't see them as "cool", you can't deny they've written some of the greatest songs of recent time (Politik, Clocks, The Scientist, Sparks, Don't Panic, etc.)

Again, I can recognise the appeal of songs like Paradise, despite it not being my cup of tea. It seems like an album they needed to get out of their system. It's a big step down from Viva La Vida which is a great great album in my opinion. There's a lot of hidden gems - the shoegazing track Chinese Sleep Chant is brilliant for example. And the English folk-influenced Cemeteries of London with it's dark Victorian imagery is simply one of their best tunes ever. I love the variety of that album, it really is one of the best albums I've heard in the last 5 years. But they still are a great band. This is just one reason, but bands and acts these days can't perform live if their lives depended on it. Coldplay are just amazing live - they really put in the effort every single show. Chris Martin once said that even if he has a miserable day, he will still go out and perform to the best of his abilities. To some folk, he's a boring arse just because he doesn't play up to the cliched rock n roll star act. For me, his modesty and nice guy image in a business which is full of arrogant jerks is entirely refreshing.

"I love everything Coldplay has done" To be honest, that is an awful comment. They have done some serious wank, remember that tripe with Rhianna? Yeah I know, that's probably their weakest song for me. I meant basically as a whole I like everything they've done so far.

The only reason Coldplay get shit on this forum is because Liam once slagged them off.
Coldplay are great, and when it comes to gigs, they are outrageously good. The Scientist is amazing and Mylo Xyloto is a nice album to put on when cooking breakfast on a saturday morning...

And if anybody says Coldplay can't rock...
Reminds me of some of Liam's songs (Ain't Got Nothin', The Meaning of Soul, etc.)

And HFP, I totally agree with you. I will defend Coldplay to the death on this forum, unfortunately as you get folk on this forum who think toxic bands like The Enemy and The Vaccines are better over them.
