i'll never compare their songs as they are in a league of their own and can't really be compared, in my opinion. i love their stuff equally (though i will say that bob's released more duds-- springsteen never did christian rock, after all). i've seen dylan live three times and springsteen four times. bruce's concerts blows dylan's not only out of the water, but out of the galaxy. it was really cool to have seen bruce at shea stadium in 2003 when dylan sat in and played a song with him. he was there only for one song but it was unforgettable. after the song was over, bruce talked about bob's influence on him and how he wouldn't be here if not for him. it was a touching moment. I'm much more familiar with Bob Dylan and prefer him to Bruce Springsteen though the Springsteen songs that i hear I generally like, especially the older ones. for instance i really like whatever Springsteen songs that are on the Cop Land movie soundtrack. also love the live version of The River on whatever album it is that has Bruce tell a story about Vietnam and his dad before the song, great stuff. God bless. Springsteen live 75 - 85 is the live version of the river with nam story,, i'll never forget the goosebumps i had when i first heard that version. still one of the greatest live performances i've ever heard.

I think at the end of the day it comes down to situations like I said before As to who's better if your in a bar picking up or trying to pick up a girl and want music you can groove to that still got soul bruce is the guy ,,if your into being more introspective it's Dylan time No loser here IMO
Honestly. I think probably the most penetrating lyric ever written was in positively 4 th street. Powerful shit that nobody can match. When he sings of what a drag it is to be you ,you could feel the hate. Unparralelled. Imo

Literally blew my speakers out with that cd box set nyr. No bs. Had to buy new speakers. Best live cd compilation ever ...and am not just saying this but your dead on bruce live is in a seperate universe to Dylan apples and oranges. ,,,the nam buildup to the river in it is Bruce's best ever ,,,when he failed and dad says good ....goosebumps no doubt. That was Bruce's best monologue before a song ever Matt. Seeing bruce live during that time was the best concert experience you could have ...nyr hit it on the head in comparing the too live there isn't a comparison
I went to many shows between 81 and 87 maybe 25 shows. ( bruce regularly played MSG, meadowlands ,Nassau, 10 or more nights on the trot and back then he played 4 and a half to 6 hours live!!! It was more than a concert it was a revival. At the end he would play with the house lights on ! For over a hour none of the 20 ,000 plus left or were seated he went as strong in the last hour as the first ,had to see it to believe it and that cd best captures it well worth the money then and now ....saw him a spectrum in Philly once do 7 hours on New Year's Eve. No bs. That's why he did tho monologs sometimes he had to catch his wind ...he is only artist who I can say other than the tones who can charge whatever they ask and actually give you your money's worth. No 90 minutes goodbye even okay it's 90 minutes ... Party just starting ...pure class.

Urgh, this is an impossible question for me haha. Bob Dylan is probably one of the greatest songwriters ever, period. He's wrote 100's of classics and even at his tender age, he's still performing (well). There will probably never be another Bob Dylan (sorry Jake Bugg...). However, I love Springsteen as well. I think Dylan might be a better lyricist, but Springsteen writes better 'songs' so to speak. Mate it really comes to preference here if you are into pure lyrics its Dylan I am a way way bigger Bruce fanatic , but he even knows nobody writes like Dylan he said so in his acceptance speech into the hall of fame said Always wanted to write like Dylan and sing like Roy Orbison and nobody sings like Roy Orbison ( I didn't use quotes cause it's from memory but I'm pretty god damn close) Anyway Springsteen hands down is just as much superior to Dylan live.as Dylan is superior in songwriting ... So to me it's a wash ...when I'm reflective and a bit low I go to Dylan When I want energy and a party atmosphere I break out one of my many live bootleg Springsteen gigs got tons from 75 thru 89. Apologies to our bootleg queens here but on Bruce I got ya beat for bootlegs ladies

Apologies to our bootleg queens here but on Bruce I got ya beat for bootlegs ladies I think it comes down to what you want out of music. Springsteen's rock and roll, Dylan's a folk singer. If you want catchy songs to get pissed to, Springsteen's your guy. I've always seen guys like Dylan and Neil Young as songwriter's favourite musicians, because they're biggest trade is their ability at crafting lyrics, so the people who appreciate their work more so are people who're trying to do the same, you know? I love both Dylan and Springsteen though, so I'm not choosing Gotta slightly disagree with you on the very top there ginger Bruce also goes deep and depressing not pop or catchy at all Nebraska The ghost of Tom Joad And there are alot of tunes let alone albums that Bruce is not catchy or that you WANT TO get pissed to THE RIVER , JOHNNY 99, ATLANTIC CITY , Agree Dylan and to a point young are more penetrating but Bruce goes deep and introspective as well Also listen to the lyrics of "brilliant disguise "he is basically telling his first wife goodbye he said so in a interview years ago , no Dylan but also not catchy all the time ya know? Had to edit the lp was tunnel sorry

Few could touch Dylan's output from 1964-1966. Simply marvelous albums (FreeWheelin, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61, Blonde On Blonde). Even the basement sessions of 1967 were great.

For just this song alone, Dylan...and there's Allen Ginsberg in the background. The beats have it, IMO.

He's probably one of the best songwriters of all time, look at his back catalogue, it speaks for itself, the man's wrote classic after classic, hit after hit. But still, in terms of pure lyricism I'd put Dylan ahead still. l And that is exactly what I said , lol Dylan better lyricist Bruce better live. So if I am down or deep. Dylan Up. Party mood. The boss Easy . It's what I've been saying all along.......

* Dylan writing the first rock/folk song to feature a handjob.

Bruce is one of the best, I'm not a huge fan personally but I don't think there's any doubt about that. If Bruce is one of the best then Dylan is frankly a freak. For most of his career he has alienated sections of his fan base, confounded expectations, confused everyone and written great songs while he's at it. The man could probably do a 4 or 5 cd best of ffs.
Sure his live performance has been patchy at times but that's not to say he hasn't been amazing when he's got it right. Frankly matt if you were expecting vocal gymnastics from a man nearing 70 who has done 100 gigs a year for 20 years then you were silly to buy the tickets.

My dad loves Springsteen, but I've never given either a proper listen. Just a few casual listens that's all. But this thread has inspired me to dig through that CD collection and get out some albums of these two.

Also I don't think we should be like 'Bruce has the tunes but Dylan was better lyricist'. Bruce has told some cracking stories and Dylan has some big tunes so I think that would be unfair on them both.
