Sounds like an astonishing claim at first thought, but when compared to Lennon, he always seems to lose out. Why? Sgt Pepper was the brainchild of Paul, he and George Martin were largely the architects of the sublime medley of Abbey Road (in my opinion, the greatest Beatles album)and he also took as many risks songwriting wise as Lennon did. Who on earth would think a song like Eleanor Rigby could get to number one? Solo wise, he also has Band on the Run, Ram, Tug of War amongst others, and I think of recent work The Fireman's Electric Arguments released in 2008 is really great as well.
Personality wise, not as intriguing and not as enigmatic as Lennon, and I realise McCartney didn't take that risk like Lennon did with arguably the finest post Beatles solo album Plastic Ono Band (though personally for me it's All Things Must Pass by George) in which he poured all his demons on to a 40 minute record but songwriting wise, I'm going to go out on a limb and say McCartney was the most talented Beatle. It's unfashionable to say that but his consistency was so great, and apart from Lennon releasing Imagine, I don't think he ever did anything of much worth there after.
So in a nutshell, I firmly believe McCartney was the most talented Beatle.

So in a nutshell, I firmly believe McCartney was the most talented Beatle. I do not think Paul McCartney has been underrated a day in his life since The Beatles took the world by storm in 1963 and America in early 1964. McCartney was the "cute" Beatle and he got the most media attention at all times unless John Lennon said something controversial from 1965 onwards. George Martin always use to say how "jealous" Lennon was that Paul got most of the attention from the media praising his songwriting. Most people know all the concept album stuff was a McCartney idea, same with the disastrous Magical Mystery Tour film. Lennon and Harrison would always distance themselves from Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour film. Paul also had a hugely successful solo career and second band in Wings. Sure I don't like the band wings but there are many good songs from that era and millions of people bought their albums and saw them in concert, including my parents several times. His albums sell, his tours are always sold out, he's on all the late night talk programs (performing and interviewing). The man is a star, a legend, even to this day. Underrated people don't get such treatment. Besides.........................George was the underrated Beatle.

His solo albums were what he wanted to do not what the people might have necessarily liked. Whereas the Wings albums were all classics but they were on the safe side from McCartney. It's also a thing of people thinking about what he might have achieved had he been alive. So IMO if McCartney had died all those years ago instead of Lennon then he might have had the same position and aura that Lennon has today.

I tend to agree. I love all of Paul's solo stuff. He is a genius!
Listen to his last album from when Linda was still alive - Flaming Pie. It is amazing.
I also like the Fireman release which is great but have to admit that Kisses on the Bottom is just dull. He should quit performing live now too. He is past it now, let's be honest & he has nothing more to proove or achieve musically.

Paul McCartney is a musical genius, who's beloved the world over.
He can still rock out with the best of them (in this case, fucking *Nirvana*). Check out his track from Sound City.

This is not my opinion this is my best friend Carl's he's been in bands his whole life ,plays live up in NYC and is the biggest fucking Beatle fanatic I ever met!!!! We have to take the fucking Beatle tour in Liverpool every time we travel to Anfield he got more bootleg Beatle vinyl than I ever saw
Any way I asked him this yesterday and he does not feel its that macca is underrated its just as he was never held in the esteem as John even before his passing. He went on about while macca wrote the tunes you hear on the jukebox ,Lennon wrote the songs that stay in your head .
That doesent mean underrated he said he feels even though he wrote the more catchy tunes but also wrote some deep ones ,lennons body of work was so more cutting edge he was held in such a higher regard intellectually for writing it makes macca look underrated cause when you talk of Beatle deep tunes its a Lennon song .again his opinion not mine cause I'm no Beatle expert. He pointed out a interview Paul did I vaguely remember it but he remembers it well ,Paul was asked what made John so special ,and he replied on the song it's gettin better johns only contribution to the tune was couldnt get no worse( or something like that). He said that was lennons brilliance . And my buddy feels that's why macca is under appreciated not underrated Again his opinion ,just thought some may want to know what a older fucking Beatle whack job thought about this topic. Cheers

mccartney isn't underrated, he is just still alive. mark david chapman made john lennon "bigger than life" famous, otherwise there wouldn't be a big difference between them

i often wonder 'what if' the beatles had carried on for another 5,6,7 years (i even started a thread about it a long time ago)... what solo hits would have ended up as beatles songs, what tunes would have made the albums, what songs would have been b-sides, who would have sung what, etc. etc.

So many of their "rejected" Beatles song ended up on their solo albums so it's tough to know what songs would be on a future Beatles release. All I know is these members fell out of love with being in the band. By late 1968, early 1969 Lennon, Harrison and Ringo didn't want to be Beatles anymore. They wanted to do other things which didn't always include music.

His tours are sell out's but he has to play Beatles material cause they wouldn't sell out otherwise imo. But for the Beatles peroid he deserves his praise but we have to remember this man isn't flawless (Frog Song, Give my regards.. and Mull of Kitrane).

kalas is right that macca isn't underrated--he's just not as appreciated as lennon. if you want underrated, let's talk about george for a while. You nailed it there nyr It seems like just as in the Beatles George found himself in the position of taking the backseat in his solo work as well just like his Beatle years While no doubt John and Paul were the heart and soul ,George's contribution is sometimes overlooked ( well alot by casual fans) by diehard fans sometimes I should say. And the same can be said for his remarkable yet again compared to John and Paul again overlooked especially by non die yards ( and I include myself there) I am not the aficionado that nyr ,Lennon,Bruno and others here are ,I acknowledge they are the most celebrated band there ever was or will ever be but will alwAys go to my grave thinking zep is the best ever ... So I overlook George as well and it's not deserved the guy was a hellluva songwriter. That should be a talking point here as nyr said

Totally agree but Get Off Your High Horse Lady is a pretty good song IMO. Something different at least.
