Last Saturday I found a cassette tape of a Mondays' album called Bummed from 1988. Yes, I still use a cassette player when I drive to work. Anyhow, it's a really good listen!
I am familiar with the Mondays music (love the soundtrack to 24 Hour Party People) but I never quite got into Pills Thrills n Bellyaches. Liked it but never went crazy over it like everyone else apparently. I think they overdid it with all the Rowetta on a lot of the songs. Bummed is a very different album. It's produced by Martin Hannett and it has a very 80s rock feel to it yet also translate well to make you want to "boogie" etc.
Here's Wrote for Luck, the big song off the album. Two versions.
Album version
Alternative remix (which is also quite good for dancey music)
Anyhow, I read they put out a new album in 2007. And they are touring every now and again.
What are your thoughts on the Mondays?

Highly underrated band when it comes to great British bands.Should have given up after Pill,Thrills and Bellyaches and they would have been held up as highly as The Stone Roses. But what a great band seen them live last year With the Inspiral Carpets supporting in Dublin. Great Night Bummed and PT&B are two of the best British albums ever made. Rhyder was a poetic genuis too.

I never quite got into Pills Thrills n Bellyaches. How can you not like tunes like these? I had them on repeat in the very early 90s! These were decent as well off the disastrous last album:

Bummed is great, Wrote for Luck may be their best song, Mad Cyril and Brain Dead are both spetacular. Lazy Itis is a rip off from Ticket to Ride so blatant that even Paul Macca took notice by himself.
But Pills... is a classic, I like it more than the Roses debut even it's better than Pills.

Black Grape's First album was pretty ace as well. I think the fact they had so many comeback's over the years its taken away the greatness from the band while The Stone roses was sooooo unexpected they got bigger and bigger leading to the massive reunion. Sad cause the Mondays were every bit as awesome as the Roses.

Let me clarify...I DO like Pills,Thrills n Bellyaches, just that I'm not a major fan of it. Kinky Afro, Loose Fit, Denis and Lois, Bob's Your Uncle and Step On are great. God's Cop, Donovan, and maybe Granbag's Funeral are alright, but I don't enjoy the last two tracks which kind of spoils the album as a whole for me. Still, I'd say 6.5 or 7/10.
Just came across this, a cover of the Bee Gees Staying Alive. They've definitely "Mondays'ed" it and it works really well IMO. It's a great choice of cover for them.
