Its a Album which people either love or think its crap. I've never met anyone who's ever been stuck in the middle about it. I heard it two weeks before it was released (it was leaked early enough) and even then i knew it wasn't going to be taken to well. It certainly didn't have the First listen impact like the first two albums.
But four years after its release i have to say its pretty great album. It took some balls to release this sort of album when most bands would have stuck to the same old formula and then go out to a Festival (Reading and Leeds) and play a few tracks from that album straight off after only been released a few days before. Its got some of the best stuff Turner's ever written in Crying Lighting, Cornorstone, Dance little Liar, Pretty Vistors and Jewellers Hand. No doubt it lost them half of the fanbase but i think it also creatively saved them that they could go down the path of making Suck it and See which i think is a great album too.
Just wondering what you guy's taught at the time when it was released and has your opinion changed over time?

Its the album that really got me into them. Jewellers Hands and Secret Door are my favourite monkey tunes. Also got some amazing b - sides from the album to,(Catapult, Afternoons Hat, Joining the Dots). Plus reading 09. Turners out put is phenomenal. 5 albums, Submarine EP plus writing on Miles Kane's album in 7 years.

My Propeller and Crying Lightning both amazing songs, probably my two favourite Arctic songs. Some decent songs on the rest of the album too like Secret Door, Cornerstone and Potion Approaching is also really good. It took me ages to properly get into it. It was only around the time when 'Suck It And See' came out that I started giving it a spin again and I actually enjoyed more than I did initially.

Arctic Monkeys are one of my favorite bands, and I've come to love this album. I got into them around the time this album was released when a friend from school introduced me to them. I went to their concert in Baltimore in 2010 and it was incredible. Songs like Secret Door, Crying Lightning, and Cornerstone are amazing. This album helped change their sound which ultimately led to Suck It and See, which is my favorite album of theirs and is one of my favorite albums ever.

It's not as instantly appealing as their first two, but is definitely the best album they've put out, high quality of songs and good direction taken. I'm surprised that Pretty Visitors was among your favourites, I thought it was one of the worst from the album (where Dance Little Liar, Cornerstone and Crying Lightning seem the obvious stand outs) And yeah, after this and suck it and see, it means we can expect absolutely anything from their 5th album

The B-sides are pretty much awesome (Sketchhead and I haven't got my strange) that does make the Humbug pretty strong. Turner and Co never let you down when it comes to B-sides. Submarine is hughly underrated with some lovely songs like Hiding Tonight and Stuck on a Puzzle. Turner is without doubt the best british songwriter since Noel Gallagher.

I do love the fact the Monkeys don't play it safe which Oasis sadly did and the Strokes as well. Suck it and See was their Pop Album really and it should have done better in the charts if they released a few of the more upbeat tunes on it (Brick by Brick and Don't Sit down.. great tunes but don't give a taster of the real sound of the album) but R u Mine was their best single since Cornerstone for me. Here's hoping for a classic for the 5th.

I love how their sound evolved, they're turning into The Doors or something.
I'm presently listening to the last couple of albums b-sides for the first time, really good shit.

The Doors,Queen of the Stone Age and Black Sabbath were a clear influence on Humbug. They went all 80's indie with Suck it and See although the B-sides from that era stayed pretty heavy. The Monkeys need to release a B-sides album cause they have some belters. Best band since Oasis for the b-sides. Humbug era was amazing for the b-sides.

I really like Humbug. Probably the album that really got me into the Arctic Monkeys. Though Suck It And See is much better IMO.

It's my Favourite AM album (crazy many AM fans see it as a step back from Humbug) just love that Summery Indie sound it has (Black Treacle, Thats were your wrong (stone roses meet Echo and the Bunnymen), Reckless serenade and the title track) mixed with some rockers (All My own Stunts,Libary Pictures and Don't sit down) plus the B-sides (Evil Twin and You and I) Plus a awesome Stand alone single in R U Mine. Hopefully it get the praise it deserves in the future.

I love the album, was such a great direction for the band at that time!
Has supplied some great depth to their live set lists when they play songs such as Pretty Visitors and Dance Little Liar.
Went watching them three times on the Humbug tour.. Great memories

Went watching them three times on the Humbug tour.. Great memories Yeah Plus turner looked like a Rock god back during that time a mix of John Lennon 68 and Jim morrision. It was the first time he was comfortable with the Frontman role.

The reason I think it's seen as a step down is that it's weak points are weaker than on Humbug (Brick by Brick, and in my opinion, Library Pictures too), and its highs don't reach the same highs (Cornerstone, Dance Little Liar). It also has nothing to appeal to fans of just albums 1 and 2 (which Crying Lightning sorta did), and their lyrics got even more abstract.

I got to say i love Library Pictures and Brick by Brick, just really fun rock n roll songs. I think Thats were your Wrong, All My own Stunts, Piledriver Waltz and Suck it and See are as good as any high point on Humbug imo.I do think as much as i love those songs Brick by Brick and Dont sit down were totally wrong songs to release as first taster and first single from the album. I think many taught "oh shit another Humbug" i think Black Treacle and Reckless Serenade would have been better opitions. Plus i think Indie bands aren't the in thing right now so that didn't help them too much either. So apart from the loyal fanbase no one else gave it a go.
