Walkabout (1971)
Based on a children's book, I remember reading the novel in primary school. Nicholas Roeg's film making style is a bit experimental and more for mature audiences, so it would have felt a bit weird watching as a kid. But its a really really interesting film with hard hitting themes and very thought provoking too.

I've finished watching The Suspect and I really enjoyed it and I got the killers right yet again. I must be on a roll at the moment.

Inside Man is the worst TV show I've ever seen, can't wait for next week. Only Moffat could get a show this imaginative, smug, awful, engaging, and unique onto primetime BBC television. It's mad, this. You have the full knowledge that nothing makes any sense, but it makes no sense in a way that feels like it hits a primal sense, like somehow it's managing to make a iron-tight web out of silly string. Fascinated to see how bad and wonderful the ending will be.

I finally got to see the final episode of Get Back. Man I wish they had put more of the final day of recording in there.

Midsommar. The horror film, from 2019.
It was alright. If I told you there was a film about a group of young Americans who go to a rural European retreat where everything is all sunshine and everyone is wearing white and they lots of communal ceremonies, it's basically the exact film you'd expect. Ending was predictable. Not much story. Lots of first-year-student "arty" directing. Meh.

I've just finished watching Evil Flower, it was ok but each episode was far too long which got a bit boring at times and the series didn't need 16 episodes either.

Rise of the planet of the apes Forgot how good this film was even 11 years later the FX still look unreal I like that one, and I like its sequels even more. I thought War for the Planet of the Apes in particular was fantastic, one of the best big budget films of the last decade.
A good little film trilogy that. Fair play to everyone involved.

If you know a first year film student who can write and direct like Ari Aster ... I'd suggest you invest in them now!
Not even being facetious, I'd imagine a fair amount of them could give it a shot. I've not seen Hereditary but Midsommar was pretty flat from a writing POV, for me. Characters were about as complex as a game of Connect-Four, and only half as compelling. The final beat telegraphed itself from the first thirty minutes, and everything just coasted along in the way you'd imagine between then and the moment it happened. Generic folk-horror commune themed around accepting death with a protagonist who is struggling to accept death - oh, and we'll remind you that she doesn't like her partner every five minutes. Wonder where that will end up. And not in a "the dread of the inevitable" way, more of a "surely this will not take two hours to get there" way. Side-characters felt like they were there out of obligation rather than necessity, and even a Certified Scaredy-Cat like me struggled to feel much suspense. Obligatory weird-sex, and an odd disabled-person-as-visually-striking-monster bit, too. First fifteen minutes were fun, I liked the beginning. The core relationship is fascinating and it deserved more exploration than lazy "Oh, he forgot her birthday and here's a handsome guy who draws pictures of her" stuff. I unironically think that a first-year student could have written most of it. It's not bad. It's just... obvious. I can't comment too much on direction, but although there were lots of pretty shots, it felt like it was as concerned with setting up with those Isn't-This-Visually-Iconic moments for people to screencap and gush about than it was with being a clear window-pane to see the story through. Those bits where they are screaming in perfect unison with the protagonist just felt like prime Look-At-Me-Being-An-Interesting-Filmmaker moments, and it broke my immersion every time. Overall, I'd give it a six. It passed the time. It was fine. It was forgettable.

I gave up on Baptisie series 2 as I can't get into it at all. I started watching Bad Boys Vile City on Netflix last night but I'm only two episodes in at the moment as they are rather long.

Season 2 of Wisting started on BBC Four last night but I'll watch the full series on IPlayer once I've finished watching Bad Boys Vile City on Netflix. I really enjoyed the first session of Wisting a few years ago.

I've just finished watching season 2 of Wisting and I really enjoyed it. Hopefully, we won't have to wait for so long for the next season like we did between season one and two. I get there was probably a delay because of Covid but it seems like ages between those seasons.

London Kills series 3 on IPlayer I've got one more episode to watch but I've enjoyed it so far. I've already seen the first two series which are also good but after those I didn't think that they were making anymore.
