Slide Away has to be my favourite Oasis track and my favourite song by any band and I know some of you feel the same. What do you think makes this song so special? I know it's a love song, but what exactly is it about (I'm not a native speaker, so I may not get every phrase in the way it was meant)? And also, do we know when it was written and to whom?

About unreachable love.
Liam often introduced this song "for the ladies" at their gigs, but this song is definitely the men song. Men are more sensitive than women, I can tell you as a female.

In short . . . overhype by fans. Fans view it as the "hidden gem" of all Oasis songs, which is of course a ridiculous sentiment really.
In reference to Oasis claims that "we are the best band in the world" Noel said: "Well, if you tell everyone you see this, then at least half of them will believe you." Most of the time I feel that fans have done this with regards to this song.
I love the track, but the way people go on about it is to the point of looneys.

I reckon the reason it's held in such high regard is because while for most bands it would be a major single (and probably the best song they ever released), such was Noel's prodigious output back then that it was just used as a bog standard album track (and latterly a B-side on Whatever) which at the time just underlined for many people how far ahead of their contemporaries Oasis were.
This is my favourite live version:

Love it on record, love it live and love it when Noel cracks out the acoustic guitar and plays it solo. Still to this day possibly my favourite Oasis song.

I asked about who it was written about a while ago on the board because I was also curious. Apparently it was written about Noel's relationship with the girl that he had an on again off again relationship with when he was still up Manchester. He had been living with her when he decided to move down to London. Can't remember her name though. It is sometimes my favourite Oasis in all formats. (My favourite changes a lot but it's always near the top) The lyrics are great when you read them. And melody is amazing. The outro gets me every time.

The girl's name is Louise and she's described in Paul Gallagher's book as Noel's "first big love." I believe she's also the person "Married With Children" is about. She's the one that complained about his music keeping her up all night.

It's impossibly brilliant. Subtle and brutal at the same time. My favourite song ever.

Jake Bugg covered it on Radio 1 earlier, made it sound completely different. I enjoyed it, the chorus especially.

It's good, great even, and definitely very emotional, but not as good as Supersonic, Live Forever or Don't Look Back In Anger in my eyes. Holy shit, that is amazing. He's got some serious fingerpicking skills.

Listening to the acoustic versions in this thread I'm not sure that the production on the song as it appears on the album is perfect...a little too heavy, although the outro is worth it. Holy shit, that is amazing. He's got some serious fingerpicking skills.
