yep, money has corrupted the beautiful game. but i dont think a salary cap is the answer. i think if a team earns their money, they should be able to spend as much of it as they want on the squad. the problem is outside money, which the FFP is trying to battle against. itll take a little time to iron out the kinks, but it could work...and has already slowed down the cash flow from external investors. plus the structure of the game counters the idea of a salary cap. this isnt america with one league and no secondary divisions up for promotion. making a cap that spans teams placed over the entire planet, going through at least 3 divisions in each country is to convoluted. or each league and each divsion has its own cap? then what happens during a cup comp or the UCL? its just not practical... theres also the stats that show salary caps only favor profitable teams. personally, i think america has 3 of the worst ideas on setting up organised sports. drafting, salary caps and using the education system to develop/scout talent.

Are people not bored of this corporate pish with the same teams in the latter stages every single year? The rich getting richer etc. You're right mate, the writing was on the wall ten years ago when Abramovich started buying trophies for Chelsea. Since then, any billionaire with a bit to spare has run rampant with a football club. The days when Nottingham Forest would jump from the old Division 2 to European Cup winners in two years is over, heck, as globe knows, Dundee Utd even got to a European Cup semi-final once, only edged out by Roma. It was varied, exciting stuff years ago. Let alone these teams, even the likes of well established European teams - but outsiders today - like Porto or Liverpool winning it ten years ago will never come back. Only the very select few super rich teams will. It's not about who is the most innovative, forward thinking team nowadays, it's about who has the best balance sheet. And the same goes for the Premier League. Football = it's fucked. Yep and we got cheated, Roma bribed the ref. Would have played Liverpool in the final too.

And the same goes for the Premier League. Football = it's fucked. I disagree, it ain't all about money. For example, middle English teams have way more money than Spanish (I remember Sevilla HAD to sell Medel to Cardiff, just promoted to PL, for example). But they have good pros searching the market and getting low cost, but not low quality players. Here we have some clubs that spend very little in signings but manage to make a good team (Rayo Vallecano is a good example). Or invest on the young teams and get good players (look at Athletic de Bilbao). Check CL finals in the past, there are few outsiders. And most times you can see teams that regularly reach final stages for some years. I don't think the past was more equal. Nor I think you can call Liverpool an outsider, since they've got 5 big ears cups

^^ Liverpool were the complete outsider to win it. A big club 20+ years ago but done fuck all since. A second rate "treble" at the turn of the century, two FA Cups and a couple of League Cups. Might sound good on paper to a mid table club but these are one of the the best clubs in Europe at the moment? My arse! They got lucky to win it, and you do need a lot of luck sometimes so can't argue with that but their a team still living on past glories. 1 trophy in the last nine season says it all. It is sad to see but it is the teams with money in the semis most years recently in the CL, get the odd one or two in there but take your pick from Barca, Real, Man United, Chelsea, Bayern (City & PSG can fuck off ). Schalke were the last "not big club" to reach the semis in 2011 and United spanked them 6-1 on aggregate. So that's one team in the last 5 season that wasn't the usual suspect. I'm not counting Athletico or Dortmund as they were no surprise in my book. The season before that was probably the last surprise winners when Inter lifted the trophy. Lyon made the semi's that year.

To be fair, they didn't get lucky to win it - I could see the point if all three goals were offside. A tactical change at half time and they excelled. Easily the best Champions League final of all time - puts all the other ones to shame. If football was like that all the time, I'd be watching all the time too.

Did you not have a young Walter Smith as the assistant manager back then?

Aye, Wattie learned his trade under Wee Jim - we got fucking abused at this game: Cheating Roma chunts, I've hated them ever since, I check their result every week hoping they've been gubbed. Not that I'm bitter or anything.

Liverpool beat Roma only on penalties so a Dundee Utd v Liverpool match could have been very interesting.

I'd like to see Xavi win one last medal at Barça. I truly loved the team they had from 2010-2012 and Xavi was instrumental in their success and their style of football.

The Guardiola era was the best team I think I've ever seen. It was unbelievable how good they were. No one came close really. I honestly think now though they have a better team. Simply because of that front 3 which is the best in world football. Lets see how they do for the next few years.

It's always a big achievement to win a European cup, but it must grate with him not to have won more given the chances he had. That said, he does have the World Cup on his CV, any manager who wins that is immortal.

I had just finished saying that out of all the midfielders on the court tonight the one I'd have wanted in my team was Rakitic

Vidal really needs to calm down or he'll get himself sent off.
Some of Barça's football is absolutely sublime.

I get a bit of a Balotelli vibe from Vidal, not sure whether it's the hair or the "enthusiastic" style of play.
I've liked Juventus for a long time and they've had some decent chances but Barcelona are once again putting in a stellar performance.
I still think both teams, irrespective of whatever talent they may have, would benefit from having Liam on side after the astounding football he played the other day.

Fair play to Juventus, they did give it their best shot in the second half. But Barca once again proving to be peerless. 4 European Cups in 9 years, unlikely we'll see that kind of records from another club in our lifetime.

That game had some of the steakiest haircuts and chaviest tattoos I've ever seen.
The Smertians League.
