Now this would be something special! Noel support or not, I'm looking forward to U2's next tour.

Actually, it stems from this joke (you might skip to 5:39 minutes)

It takes U2 forever to do anything. 4-5 years between albums and tours. By that time we will have Another Beady Eye album and most likely two Noel Gallagher albums. God bless.
However, doesn't U2 have an album in the can already that was produced by Danger Mouse? I'd love for him to work with Beady Eye. Great producer.

They're recording with Danger Mouse at the minute. Noel said he tossed his hat in the ring. We'll see in 5 years when the tour is actually announced. Noel mentioned meeting Bono and Danger Mouse when they went to the Croke Park show in the Tales.

Noel mentioned meeting Bono and Danger Mouse when they went to the Croke Park show in the Tales. That Danger Mouse project was started in late 2009. I seem to remember U2's manager saying the Danger Mouse album was done in early 2010 and would come out soon! Now it is two years later...just shows how long it takes them to do anything and we all think Noel takes forever! U2 is on another level.

Well apparently, U2 were working on 3 albums.
They were meant to release one called Songs Of Ascent in 2009/2010, which was meant to be a companion piece to No Line On The Horizon, similar as to how Zooropa was a companion piece to Achtung Baby. Due to the relative commercial failure of that album though, Songs of Ascent has been shelved for the time being - a shame because it was meant to be a medidative ambient atmospheric album (U2's speciality at doing this most evident in The Unforgettable Fire, paving the way for the likes of Sigur Ros to follow in their footsteps) with tunes that had been leaked on the internet years previously - sounded like a far better album than No Line On The Horizon. Produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois most likely.
The second one is the Danger Mouse record - all likelihood that this is going to be released, especially as a lot of work has been put in to it.
The third album, the club sounding album produced by RedOne, has been cancelled - in all honesty, the best thing to happen. A bunch of 50 year olds and a club sounding album. No thanks.
Have no idea about when they plan to release these albums but Songs of Ascent and the Danger Mouse project sound encouraging. Noel would fit the bill perfectly as a support act - a very good friend of Bono and would give him the perfect opportunity to play in stadiums again. Can't wait to see how U2 respond after the lukewarm NLOTH - hopefully they come back with a stonker of an album.

Interesting stuff, Matt.
What did you think of their 1990s 'club' album Pop? I think it's a tad underrated.

Interesting stuff, Matt. What did you think of their 1990s 'club' album Pop? I think it's a tad underrated. Pop is definitely an underrated U2 album. I love that it is dark and a complete departure for the band of the 80s. It is a shame that their experimentation ended after the 3 album arc of Achtung-Zooropa-Pop. I'd love to have seen more but U2 didn't like its "commecial" failure or the over blown PopMart tour. No Line On The Horizon actually has some good tunes on it but they are just too damn long. Magnificent (5:24), The Moment of Surrender (7:24) and Unknown Caller (6:03) needed to be shorter in my opinion. I have a feeling their Danger Mouse album is going to be extremely poppy and commercial friendly. Expect another mammoth U2 tour in another year or so.

Still remember that Noel quote from Q Mag in November 1995.
"The dream is to be U2, not just a new band with trendy haircuts".

It's a shame that U2 have been treading water for some time. A lot of younger people forget, or simply don't know, that they used to be an extremely creative band.

Pop is an interesting record. I do like the disco stuff like Discotheque and Mofo but calling it a disco album is also overstating the concept of the album, considering there is a lot of dark stuff there like Wake Up Dead Man, based on the troubles in Ireland. Hardly disco stuff but I think they're great songs nonetheless.
But their creativity from the 80s and the 90s makes them one of the greatest bands of all time in my opinion. To achieve the status of biggest band in the world, while being extremely creative along with critical praise, well I don't know any other band who has achieved that status without screwing up commercially. And I haven't even touched upon how great they are live.

I remember reading a review of Pop when it came out in 1997 and my favorite line was "Staring at the Sun is the best song Noel Gallagher never wrote".

Staring at the Sun is one of my favorite U2 songs. Great band. Even on their shit albums there's some great songs. No Line on the Horizon is..... well it has Magnificent and Moment of Surrender I guess...
