The Stone Roses kicked off their first tour in 16 years in Barcelona tonight (June 8), playing a dazzling 90 minute set. The gig, the first full show of what will be a 27-date tour taking in festivals, massive outdoor gigs and arena shows, took place at Barcelona's 1,900-capacity Razzmatazz venue. It was the first time the band, who announced their reformation last year, had played the city and their second show in 16 years, following a low-key gig in Warrington last month. As with that gig, the band started off tonight with 'I Wanna Be Adored', during which Ian Brown's vocals were drowned out by the crowd. The first few songs saw the band slightly tentative, with Brown's singing, where audible, veering out of tune. But things clicked six songs in, when 'Where Angels Play' morphed into a beautiful 'Shoot You Down'. 'Waterfall' followed, with Reni's backing vocals lifting the delicate melody. An extended 'Fools Gold' then blew the roof off the sweaty venue, with Brown ending the song by applauding a particular burst of John Squire guitar heroics. 'I'm Standing Here', 'She Bangs The Drums' - of which Ian Brown said: "This one is for the ladies" - and 'Made Of Stone', followed, provoking mass sing-alongs, before a strident 'Love Spreads', complete with Ian Brown rap, closed the set. "2012 is the year of the comeback," Brown said from the stage. "And there is a man at the back who knows all about that," he added, referring to Liam Gallagher, who was watching from the sound desk. The band then left the stage and the hall light stayed dimmed while the crowd remained in place, serenading Liam with terrace chants. Five minutes later, the Roses strode back on. "Do you want more?" Brown asked, cheekily. "We are breaking all the rules here. We don't do encores." They then played a lengthy, over 10 minutes long version of 'I Am The Resurrection'. The gig ended with the band in a group hug at the front of the stage. "It was the best gig I have ever seen," said Andy Ranson, a Barcelona resident originally from Warrington. "The atmosphere was incredible." "It was fucking good," said Matt Ridgway, who lives in Chile. "But his voice was pretty weak and not helped by the pretty crappy soundsystem." "It was great," said Santi Saez, from Barcelona. "His voice maybe not so good but John Squire was incredible." The Stone Roses played: 'I Wanna Be Adored' 'Sally Cinnamon' 'Mersey Paradise' 'Ten Storey Love Song' 'Where Angels Play' 'Shoot You Down' 'Waterfall' 'Fools Gold' 'Standing Here' 'She Bangs The Drums' 'Made of Stone' 'This Is the One' 'Love Spreads' 'I Am The Resurrection' "2012 is the year of the comeback," Brown said from the stage. "And there is a man at the back who knows all about that," he added, referring to Liam Gallagher, who was watching from the sound desk. And I saw on twitter that tomorrow on BBC 5, Liam is going to give a review. Hear Liam Gallagher review The Stone Roses in Barcelona for @bbc5live at 08:20 tomorrow.

Thanks Tom and theclock for the pic and information. I'm seeing them next week. Remember seeing Ian Brown singing I Wanna Be Adored in Paradiso 4 years ago, now I'll see them playing this song together.
But Where the hell is Sugar Spun Sister, one of my most favourite Roses songs?!

But Where the hell is Sugar Spun Sister, one of my most favourite Roses songs?! They played it at the Warrington gig, so it might be a case of rotating it with something else...

Except Elephant Stone and Sugar Spun Sister the set list is really great. Where Angels Play, Shoot You Down, Sally Cinnamon, even Mersey Paradise and Standing Here...great stuff. Oh and did they play Bye bye badman? Tom says they did but it's not on NMEs setlist.

Oh and did they play Bye bye badman? Tom says they did but it's not on NMEs setlist. The Twitter person I was getting it off, said Badman, but after they said they were confused, and it was Where Angels Play. I just left it last night, because nobody seemed interested, aha.

Hmm, I really hope they add more songs to that set. It's a bit short, isn't it? Either way, I'm excited! ;D

As long as they play Made of Stone, that should be played at every gig, live staple.

As long as Squire forgets his guitar solo's from Second Coming, I will be happy.
