Spinal Tap were a ficticious band formed to make the movie "This is Spinal Tap". The movie was a "documentary" following the rock group on their latest tour. So prior to the movie being made Spinal Tap did not exist. However for the movie all the songs were original songs written and played by the cast (as seen in the film) and writers of the movie. The idea was to take the piss out of every rock band that was big at the time. The soundtrack of the movie was released as if it was an album.

So they weren't a real band but they were... if you follow.

Christopher Guest was the primary writer and has since made other mock documentary movies such as "Best in Show" and "A mighty Wind". The latter starred the same cast as Spinal tap, albiet a lot older.

Also, Harry Shearer who voices half of the Simpsons characters played the bass player who's name I cant remember right now.
