Haha, that's awesome. Get him on the case! He invited him to his wedding in October. No shot he comes! but that sounds like something the boss would do. wouldn't that be something if he shows up?

He knows that if he appears at a fans wedding it'll completely shift focus from the bride and grooms special day to "holy shit Bruce Springsteen is here!!!!! Go nuts!!!!!!!!".

Haha, amazing! P.S. Arguably The Boss's greatest ever song that one. Yeah it's a great one. I didn't appreciate it for a long time. I'd skip it to get to Promised Land. Now I love it. I know it's blasphemy but I think I like the Promise version better.

The writer Michael Hann wrote a great article on the song a few years back. www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2013/mar/07/old-music-bruce-springsteen-racing-street

I woke up with Thunder Road's opening verse in my head today so that means I'll be listening to Born to Run next.
I'm happy to have such deeply satisfying music to keep me company.

I'm not a Springsteen fan, but I love The River and I love this cover by The National too.

I'm not a Springsteen fan, but I love The River and I love this cover by The National too. What a great cover - fascinating to hear that. Matt Berninger's dulcet tones are perfect for that somber track. The original version is very sparse and eerie (like the the entire album, Nebraska is just demos recorded in Springsteens bedroom) and a full band version there gives an idea of what the E Street Band version may be like (hidden in the vaults - Springsteen went against management wishes for a mainstream full recording and released the demos instead).

It's haunting, desolate and bleak but each song tells a story, and his great lyrics always seem to tap into the psyche of the doubts and fears of his characters, but there's always a lingering sense of hope though. I love Bruce - he's probably the only artist I don't have any criticisms towards - despite being a genius songwriter and performer, he's always retained a sense of modesty and dignity and never being aloof or arrogant. Although some may find his songs a bit bleak, he always has empathy towards the characters in his songs. He seems to balance populist appeal with genuinely great music - never veering into triteness or pretension. His gigs are some of the greatest communal experiences you'll ever find - he has so much respect for his fans, and even in his mid 60s puts on over a three hour show time and time again with different set lists every night and accepts requests from the fans.

Thanks matt. I'll definitely check album Nebraska. I nearly forgot that he's also written "Because The Night" with the godlike Patti Smith.

I'm with Matt check out Nebraska. That's where Mansion on the Hill comes from. Just remember when you listen to it that the entire album he recorded by himself on a 4 track recorder in his bedroom. If you like the song Born to Run check out that album too. It's a very big album in the Phil Spector wall of sound vein. I think you might like the album Darkness on the Edge of Town. It's his best album IMO and was the album he wrote Because the Night for. Most of the songs are in that vein. He should never have given that song to her. It's just too good. He says he doesn't regret it but how can he not?

Like I said yesterday, I don't dislike him, but for some reason "The Boss" - the image was a sort of obstacle for me not getting into him (which is silly, I know). I'm definitely going to check 2 albums you and matt recommended - Nebraska and Darkness on the Edge of Town. I'm a fan of Phil Spector's work. and I know what you're saying about "Because The Night", but I'm glad that he gave Patti the song. I'm a huge Patti Smith fan. I adore her. Everytime she plays that song live, she dedicates it to her late husband - Fred Sonic Smith from MC5.

There's the original unreleased version on The Promise (which are all rough cuts and extra tracks recorded during the Darkness on the Edge of Town) but it doesn't compare to the vigour and swagger that Smith gives. Though Springsteen does a great live version himself.

Ive never heard him perform that version live except with other artists. I believe it might have been rerecorded.

Good point, I'm wondering if he ever recorded it during the Darkness sessions (it was devised during those sessions at least) it was incomplete before Patti padded it out with her own lyrics (so it's a collaboration) so there was no reason to record before handing it over to Patti.

Its almost a caricature. He wanted to be the biggest rock star in the world and he achieved it making the best selling pop/rock albums of the 80's. It just got a little silly w/ the American flags and dancing in music videos I prefer 72-82 Springsteen. He want from singer songwriter to jazz/rock/funk to wall of sound to rock n roll to pop/rock/rockabilly to folk in a ten year period. Heres a couple songs you should check out. All live versions. Springsteen is great on record IMO but live hes in another stratosphere. Thunder Road It's Hard To Be a Saint in the CIty Bowie covered this in the 70's on one of his albums Because The Night His voice is a little rough here but If you didnt know he could play guitar. Lost in the Flood My all time favorite live recording of his Jungleland If you like those live videos they all come from (except Because the Night) a live cd bruce springsteen and the e street band hammersmith odeon london '75 which are all songs from his first three albums

I was looking at the wikipedia page because I wasnt sure if he played it live before her release. Earliest live recording I have is July 78. Her sinhle came out in april of that year. It says the promise version was recorded during the Darkness sessions but I'm still not sure. I know he rerecorded a bunch of the songs for that release. Funniest part of the article is there is about 8 paragraphs on a version Garbage released a few years back. Ive always loved this version w/ him and Michael Stipe playing the Patti version Bonus Man on the Moon w/ REM
