Just listened to the soundcheck version of If I Had A Gun again. The final version is undeniably crap in comparison. The 'ahh' bits, why did he change that? In the soundcheck he sings 'ahh ahh ah ahh ah ahh, ahh ahh ah ahh' but in the studio version he just repeats the same phrase twice instead. I know you know what I mean I just don't really know how to word it. It sounded melodically much better in the soundcheck and can't understand why it was changed.
The arrangement of the song is terrible too. In the soundcheck the 'ahh' bits felt like an ethereal comedown after the high of the chorus but in the finished version they sound dull because they're used inbetween verses and as such sound like something to merely fill a gap.
It doesn't sound good. The drums plod and the horrible one-note guitar solo being played in the background of the second half is baffling.
Noel doesn't seem to have a clue what he's doing anymore.

they lost something agreed, but the sound check was a recording on a phone. it can not be replicated on an album. Noel can't win can he really if he is bring held up against material he did.not release.

Only thing I don't like about If I Had A Gun is that weird stuttery sound on the acoustic in the intro, thought it was a problem with the copy I had when I first heard it, but even the single and album versions have the same weird sound to it.
Really love the song though, one of those songs that sends shivers down my spine when I listen to it on headphones, I know that sounds stupid but it genuinely does.
Not overly keen on the production on what I've heard of the album though to be honest, Dave Sardys production style seems to be very mono, his mixes tend to sound very thin instead of wide and full of depth. A lot of the sounds tend to get lost in the mix as a result, sometimes when I listen to songs he's produced, If I Had A Gun being a prime example, a lot of the sounds just get buried in the mix and things end up sounding a bit unnecessarily messy.

Somebody needs to look up the word "undeniable". I agree that IIHAG could have been better, but few songs are produced 100% like I want them to be.

ohhh shut up! ffs... if you enjoyed a shit quality. half arsed soundcheck version of this song. then fine but stop preaching. and that goes for the rest of you! fucking driving me mad. " oh, the soundcheck was better" good for you!
for the record the album version is far more superior. as it has been properly written, properly produced and properly recorded!

it seems to me people would rather Noel'o released an album of just him and his guitar in a big hall with him mumbling along trying to work out arrangements

Didn't really like the soundcheck version. Thought it was ok but never inderstood the fuss. Now the song is finished I get the fuss. One of Noel's true classics.

Looks like Noel was wrong about what he said on 6Music yesterday; some people obviously can't tell that the soundcheck versions are not the final versions.
Don, let's face it; if this released as a slow acoustic song you would be moaning, whining and bitching about it not going anywhere or being ploddy. People like you just want something to moan and complain about and it's really fucking annoying me because you don't seem to have a good word to say about anything.

Good call J.B if it had been released as an acoustic song people would moan that he has had years and just put it out like the soundcheck, see the comments about Record Machine and Stop The Clocks been too close to the demos, songs change people. 90% of Noel's songs will start as just him and an acoustic most have layers added to them in the final recording session. This one he has choosen to chuck the kitchen sink at.

The word career was the sarcastic part of that sentence!
I'd rather Noel put a bit of effort into making his albums sound good. We get the stripped down acoustic versions of his songs on the radio sessions anyway...

IIHAG is the best song on the album as it is. The production is great, and the song is brilliant. Undeniably.
